I would much rather prefer Roger doing the PBP for the television games. Robb Kerr just hasn't seemed very comfortable and is always so awkward on camera with Simmer. He has this one head nod he will do over and over again on every point Simmer makes and almost looks sleepy when he is doing it. Robb Kerr is a hard working guy and was good on the afternoon show but he does a whole less PBP and too much color commentary while calling the games.

I sat next to Rob Kerr at a couple pre-season games his year. He's incredibly well-prepared for every game. He also seems more and more relaxed in the role (during games), which I think reflects in the product this season.
And personally, as somebody who watches the Sportsnet product, I'd much rather have insight into the hows and whys of hockey decisions rather than get "scoops" about what's happening. (For instance, WHY Jarome Iginla was traded to a certain team for certain assets interests me more than knowing which team he's going to).

Kerr's strength as a prepared radio or intermission commentator is for me, part of the problem with his play by play call.
I think calling a game fluidly is much harder than many imagine. As an exercise, watch a game on mute and record yourself calling the play. No swears, no profane colloquialisms, bonus points for speed, accuracy and alliteration.
Unfortunately, I think Kerr has been cast in the wrong role. If sportsnet cut Eric Francis and switched Millions and Kerr, giving Kerr a full segment to discuss interesting information from his research, the Flames broadcast product would be vastly superior. Even if those segments were canned pre-recordings with Kerr up in the booth WITH Millions and Simmer chiming in, it would make all three of them look/sound better.

I think that's exactly it. The guy is extremely intelligent and has some really great insight into the game and the Flames. The problem is that being a PBP requires a totally different skill-set than what Rob excels at. Being a PBP announcer is just not a role that encourages long verbose discourse. When on the FAN, he can slow down and is really in his element. Rob Kerr, on the Fan giving his opinion, is still really hard to beat IMO.
While not his perfect position either, if he was at least the Color guy on Sportsnet, he would be much more successful. It would put him in a position where he can at least have more time to dissect the game and add insight.

I think that would be a great way to use him moving forward if the broadcast didn't want to move on from Simmer.
Have Kerr host the intermission/introductions and then join Millions and Simmer in the broadcast booth as the sort of substance colour guy. Simmer chimes in from the player perspective, says something about getting pucks and bodies to the net, and then Kerr follows that up with the shot-count or the historical shot differential, whatever, between the two teams. Period ends, cut to commercial, send it back to the guys back east, queue up the canned intermission segment like rookie reporter or whatever zany thing Kerr has worked up, cut to commercial, and then back to the guys up in the booth.
That's a great format, in my opinion.

^ I agree with the last few posters about Kerr.
Would love to have Lou calling the play with Kerr adding colour

I still have trouble seeing how Simmer even got to be the Color-guy. The whole purpose of the position is to add entertainment value to the game. He was a great player back in the day, and sounds like a really nice guy, but the only color he adds to Flames games is beige. Surely, Sportsnet can see this?

I can see the value of Cammalleri re-signing, both for the Flames and Cammalleri. But that probably only happens if there's no real demand for him elsewhere.

I just got back from SAP Center (formerly known as HP Pavillion) as I was buying concert tickets. On the way there, there was content here on the radio and local media about San Jose being interested in Mike Cammalleri. When I got to SAP Center some of the workers/team members inside were chatting about it as well. They were mentioning with Couture, Hertl, Torres, Havlat and Burish all injured on forward, that another forward would be on their wish list. Couture, Torres and Havlat are all back skating but the Sharks need another forward for the playoff run.
Anyways, I thought this was worth mentioning. Cheers.

Roger, I was one of the guys around here that took issue with your news about Cammalleri asking for a trade during the summer. It seemed like the team was saying the opposite publically.
I appreciate you giving us the background information now. My bad.

Holy crap, what a thread...
Anyway, my thoughts on extending Cammy... it all comes down to what we could sign him for, and what we might get in return for him. If we could get a first AND a prospect, I think that would be huge, but I dunno if he goes for that. If we just get a late first, it might be better to keep him.
He's not only a great player, but he appears to be a great teammate. He has a good work ethic. Things like that are important for a young growing team. People forget that in a rebuild you need some mid age players and some vets too. You need people to teach the kids, and round out the experience. I actually think that might be one of Edmonton's problems right now. (Though, there are many of course) But all great young teams always have a few older guys showing them the ropes, keeping them on track. Making sure they don't get too high, or too low. Cammy seems like the perfect guy for that, plus he's a pretty decent player on top of that. And then there is the talk about the cap floor. Really, that doesn't enter into my reasoning too much, but with all things being equal, wouldn't you want to spend the money on a guy you really like and is a good fit for the team, than someone new who might just be an overpay?
All that said, don't get me wrong, we shouldn't keep him at all costs. If he wants a big contract or a no move clause, then yeah, we try and get something for him. And that's what I'm saying, it's a hard opinion to fairly nail down because you really have to weigh both sides and we don't have access to that right now. It's really a 50/50 option in my eyes. Cost vs return.
A quick aside to the Fucale discussion. Yeah, it would be nice to have him in our system. But I wouldn't crown him with anything yet. Even the best junior goalies are really only guaranteed to be a capable backup. Picking goalies is such a crap shoot. And not only that, they take so long to develop. And hey, Saros seems to have outplayed him in the WJC's anyway. (Saros plug cause I picked him up in the CPHL draft last summer, whoot!) So while yeah, having Fucale would be nice, having Cammy is nice too. I can't really call it a bad trade. And it may actually end up being a good one.

This can't be serious! WTF? Need bigger, faster, younger, and more skill/talent. Cammy has only one of those factors.

I'd be happy with just a first or a prospect who can make the team out of camp. A Simon Depres or Beau Bennet out of Pittsburgh would be solid.
