I have always thought of Hiller to be a below average goalie on a good team. I'm hoping Burke can find a better option to play with Ramo next season. I don't expect Berra to be re-signed.

Ever since he had vertigo I don't think he's been as good as he was when he first broke into the league, but I don't think the Ducks could have asked for more out of their starting goaltender for most of Hiller's career with the Ducks. The Ducks really haven't been that good of a team since their Cup win.
I still remember Hiller's performance against Team Canada and I always felt that he was one of those goaltenders where if he's on his game he's close to unbeatable. He was really good in his first two years in the league. I think he's still a quality #1 goaltender.

At this point, the boldest statement I can make about our goalies is this: both seem to be progressing.

Rammo is legit, too legit to quit.
Berra is good too.
Last thing I worry about on Flames is goalies now. Better defence and more consistent offence are bigger issues IMO.

They have both been good enough to keep the Flames in the game for the last few games.
Not exactly a screaming endorsement, but that's a lot better than the start of the season.

I've seen enough from both goalies this month to believe they're suitable stopgaps until Gillies turns pro. No use wasting assets acquiring other goalies unless we're suddenly in a miraculous playoff run & goaltending is the obviously weak link.
Good on ya, Reto and Karri.

At this point it is a coins flip which one is a better choice on game day between Ramo and Berra. I expect they will both be back next year unless Burke and the new GM decides to build from the starting goalie outward.
I think they will hold steady until Gillies emerges.

It's good that the goalies are playing until they lose. That's the way it should be when you don't have a legit #1 goaltender just yet. Both goalies have their goods and bads, and I like what we are doing with them, so 50/50 is the way to go with these two.

I know Gillies is a great-looking prospect, but I really hope people have realistic expectations for him. He's only a sophomore in college, so pencilling him in as our bonafide #1 starter as of 2014/15 or 2015/16 seems a little premature. Let the guy continue to develop and hopefully he stays on the upward trajectory that he's currently on. Until then, we've got Ramo, Berra, and Joni Ortio will eventually get a shot as well (if not this year then next).

Last 5 games for each goalie:
Reto Berra:
Save % - 0.932
GAA - 2.03
Record - 1-4-0
Stopped 137/147 shots
Allowed 10 goals against, 6 at even strength
Allowed 2 or fewer goals in 4 out of 5 games
----------------------------------------------------------------
Karri Ramo:
Save % - 0.920
GAA - 2.34
Record - 2-1-2
Stopped 138/150 shots
Allowed 12 goals against, 11 at even strength
Allowed 2 or fewer goals in 2 out of 5 games
Getting much better goaltending from both guys lately, as they acclimate to the differing ice size and better competition.
Too bad all our offense dried right up.

I never thought we'd be debating who is the better goaltender this early. Kiprusoff retires and we have 2 solid goaltenders fighting it out on the ice for #1 position. It's a nice surprise I didn't see coming

Ya, the goalie stats have looked pretty good for a while now. Seems to have started right at the same time Wideman went down and Giordano came back. Hmmmmm

I'd definitely run this tandem out there for this year and the first half of next. The reason being that sometimes goalies lose it, sort of like how Derek Smith was awesome for a few months and then disappeared. Then look to move out the worse of the two and bring in Ortio.

I think they were hoping for at least one of them to be decent, or they wouldn't have re-signed MacDonald for insurance. However, point made!

Well hopefully they aren't patting themselves on the back too much because so far it looks like a pretty piss poor decision by them.

It's still too early to know for sure what we have in both goalies in the long term, but there certainly wasn't a shortage of people trying to write them off before the season even began, or after just a few games into the season. It's nice to see those people silenced at least for now.

ummm not really. Berra looks like he is a younger version of MacDonald, and i can't say that Ramo looks like a legit starter. All i see is 2 goalies fighting it out to see if they can be very good back-ups. That said i will gladly give them the rest of the year to prove me wrong.

They've both proven that they're good enough to win games behind a bad team. For two guys coming from outside the NHL, that's already a success.
As much as we like to make fun of the "best outside the NHL" comments, seems like the management and the scouts got what they expected from them.
