Just realized:
An OT or SO win is actually the optimal result for the Flames this season. Because winning is good, but we don't really want to pass other teams in the standings, so actually we want to give them points too

Yeah and a great year for the top 8 in the west to have crazy good records. We weren't going to make the playoffs anyway so now we have no chance but to keep making smart decisions for the rebuild.

Monahan was 8 out of 23 last night. 1 out of 9 against Jokinen, but 50% combined against everyone else.
Against Edmonton, he was 12 of 19, including 5 of 8 from Boyd Gordon, who is 5th in the league (57.6%).

He seems to be very dedicated to getting better at face offs... An he is improving. He's won quite a few in the offensive zone that have lead to goals/scoring chances. Rookies struggle in the dot no matter who they are... Crosby and Bergeron were both terrible at face offs when they started in the NHL. Now they are always at the top of the league in face off %.

He's 44% on the season now.
Take into account that MacKinnon is only 37%. I'd say he's doing pretty well.

Great game from the kids, especially the Baertschi, Monahan, Hudler line.
Berra also looked really good against the 40+ shots.

After last night's marathon shootout, I got curious and decided to look up some numbers...
- The Flames have participated in 71 shootouts since the 2005-06 season. Only Philadelphia (68) and Carolina (60) have been in fewer.
- Oddly enough, despite that, the Flames and Flyers have gone to the shootout 3 times together, even though they have only played each other 6 times since the shootout was introduced. The Flames have also gone to 3 shootouts in 6 games against the Panthers.
- The Flames have played at least one shootout against 24 teams (this year was the first time against both the Capitals and the Thrashers/Jets). The Bruins, Habs, Sens, Lightning, and Rangers are the only teams the Flames have not played in a shootout.
- Nashville and Winnipeg are the only Western Conference teams the Flames have faced only once in a shootout. Buffalo, Florida, and Philadelphia are the only Eastern Conference teams the Flames have faced more than once in a shootout (not including Columbus and Detroit, who were in Western Conference for all shootout games).
- The team the Flames have faced in the shootout the most is Minnesota, at 9 times (4W/5L). Second is Columbus, at 7 (3W/4L). Vancouver and Edmonton are next at 6 and 5 times respectively.
- The Oilers (4W/1L) and Canucks (4W/2L) are the only teams the Flames have faced more than once in a shootout and have a winning record against.
Last night's shootout felt weird because it went beyond three rounds. This isn't surprising because the Flames have only had 16 shootouts go beyond 3 rounds, and only 7 have gone beyond 4. Last night was the first time the Flames have won a shootout that went into a fifth round.
31 of the Flames 71 shootouts have ended before at least one team's third shooter took his shot.
With Columbus and Florida being the next two home games, if you have tickets, you might want to warn the babysitter that you might be home late.

Also, yesterday's SO win ended a streak of 9 consecutive SO losses.
