We lost, oh well. Analyze it for what it was, and the Flames outplayed them badly. Sometimes the better team doesn't always win in one game face offs. Yes, all that matters is the wins and losses, and yes it's frustrating to lose a Saturday Night game to the oil, and yes it's frustrating given the Flames haven't won in a while, but at the end of the day tonight's game actually showed the Flames are already further ahead in the rebuild than our friends up north. Replay that game 10 times and the Flames win 9 times.

Are we forgetting this is the first season of the rebuild? Some people are overreacting suggesting firing Feaster, trade for a new goaltender and so on...
Yes, it is annoying to lose to the Oilers especially after we constantly calling them a joke of a team. This is the Oilers' 3rd or 4th year of the rebuild and they had trouble beating the Flames? I think when the Flames started well early in the season some people think we are a playoff team but we are not. I think we have some veteran players here that are just happy to be on the ice and not putting enough effort. We have players like David Jones who is making so much money and are supposed to be helping with scoring goals. So far he's been a dissapointment. Galliardi started off pretty well but lately has been awful. Stajan are having an inconsistent season. He'll play well one game then just dissappear the next few games. Bob Hartley insisting on putting Jackman and McGrattan together in a game puzzled me especially when neither are being physical most of the games. Early in the season CP are calling for Berra-Ramo tandem but when both goalies struggled, they get so mad. I guess we are forgetting this is their first season in the NHL. Even Kipper, Nabokov and other European goalies struggled in their first year so I don't think Ramo and Berra are different.
I was dissappointed about the lost tonight especially after playing well(finally) in the 1st and 2nd period only to collapsed in the 3rd period.

Chicago and Pittsburgh were both in our shoes 7 years ago. If we can turn out anywhere near as good as them, I'm in. On the plus side, Monahan scored a beauty tonight and so did Wideman. Going to be patient. I'll panic if we turn out like Edmonton. I don't care that we lost, that team is still a laughing stock and a mess.

Just ask the Oilers.
Are you serious?

I would say that drafting Sean Monohan, and then making him an integral part of the team in his first NHL season are good steps in the right direction, and a clear sign that he is one of the "backbones" of which you speak.

It's pretty unrealistic to expect some sort of tangible turnaround and perceivable direction when year one of the rebuild is not even a third of the way complete. Nevertheless, I would argue that there are a number of players already in the lineup (Brodie, Bouma, Baertschi), on the farm (Sieloff, Ramage, and Wotherspoon), in the CHL (Poirier, Klimchuk) and the NCAA (Gaudreau, Gillies, Arnold) who are "being groomed" to be a big part of the team in the future. The problem today is that there is still a lot of time between now and when the team can expect to be competitive again. Some of these players will turn out to be key contributors, others will not, and the Flames will draft a couple dozen more in the process.

This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Having said that, this was a frustrating game that the Flames should have won. However, there is not much that can be done about it now, simply because the team is rebuilding, and because of their current injury situation. One of the difficult parts of rebuilding will be watching this play out. I would suggest that suggesting or expecting major changes based on a result like this are probably over-reactions.

This isn't an overreaction. The fire Feaster suggestions started a long time ago. Many posters had wanted Feaster to trade for a young potential #1 goalie who have proven themselves as backup goalies in the NHL like Bernier and Bishop. Kari Ramo was never the answer and Feaster was wrong to think he would be.

This isn't Ramo's first year in the NHL and Kipper and Nabokov didn't struggle in their first year in the NHL. Nabokov struggled in their first year in the AHL, but he was only 22. How many 26/27 year old European goalies struggled in their first year in the NHL and turned out to be a decent #1 goalie?

It is an over-reaction, especially considering how well Feaster has performed over the summer.

It would have made a lot less sense for Feaster to trade for one of Bishop or Bernier before having seen either of his two recent goalie acquisitions on NHL ice. Besides, with how well Ortio and Gillies have performed in the past calendar year, I think it is fair to say that this was a calculated gamble that has payed off very well for Feaster and the Flames. One or both of them will play NHL games next year, and if their games translate as well to the NHL as many believe they will, then having yet another goalie in the system would be a colossal waste.

How great was monahan and hudlers goal. It even has great on time commentary.

It's only year one, so much to look forward to.

How is it an over-reaction when the majority of us have been calling Feaster to be fired and have been unchanging about it for quite some time?

What makes a lot less sense is to forgo the opportunity to acquire a highly regarded young goaltender with #1 potential who has already shown himself capable of being an NHL backup in favor of two goaltenders who haven't proven anything in the NHL. You come across a chance to upgrade at a good price you do it.

How has this "calculated gamble" pay off very well for Feaster and the Flames? Look at the standings. Look at the goalie stats. What does Ortio and Gillies' potential to play NHL games next year have to do with forgoing the opportunity to acquire a guy like Bishop or Bernier and bringing in Ramo instead? It's not like Feaster went out and signed a Tim Thomas to a one year deal, he went after Ramo and signed him to a two year deal thinking he can hold the team over or become the #1 goalie the team needed. Feaster's decision isn't looking good at all and this was a very predictable result.

It is an over-reaction because Feaster appears to be doing his job very competently as of late. To hold on to decisions that were made months ago, and to ignore the several positive actions made more recently is foolish. To fire Feaster NOW for things that he did months ago is an over-reaction.

This depends entirely upon what sort of opportunity was actually present. For whatever reason, not all NHL general managers are privy—through no fault of their own—to every deal or every potential deal that occurs. It's easy for us to in retrospect insist upon what Feaster should or should not have done, but you simply do not know all the circumstances behind the trades, nor the level of the Flames' involvement in either.

The calculated gamble is that what is happening in the Flames goal NOW is not very important in the long run. If Gillies and Ortio are ready to play in the NHL next years as they appear they might be, then having Ramo, Berra, Bernier/Bishop, and MacDonald all in the organisation IS a problem, and one with longer term consequences.

Furthermore, Feaster did not choose Ramo and Berra over one of Bishop or Bernier. They were already Flames property when the other trades were made, so you can hardly make a point that this was an actual decision to be made.

In the end, this is a pretty silly thing from which to demand Feaster's head.

Ugh... I thought Berra was the answer to our goaltending woes. What happened in the 3rd?? A lack of focus? Weak goals to concede.

Bright side:
-strong game from Monahan.
-despite the loss we're still 3 points up on Edmonton with 2 games in hand.
-Oilers still suck.

Umm... what? Proclaiming Feaster is a competent based on what appears to be competence of late and ignoring what he did the past couple of years is over-reaction. It's not over-reaction when one has wanted Feaster fired for quite some time and have been consistent about it. No reaction there.

You're missing the point. Nobody is advocating keeping 7 goaltenders between the Heat and the Flames. You identify the goaltenders you want to move forward with and then trade or get rid of the rest if you have no place for them. Bishop has been traded twice the past two years because both the Blues and the Senators thought they had two better goaltenders to go forward with. Obviously, had the Flames acquired Bishop or Bernier, it's only logical that either McDonald wasn't getting a contract extension or Ramo wouldn't have been brought over.

They were Flames property but they were unsigned. Ramo and Berra were targeted by Feaster but it's not like the Flames were heavily invested in them. If there's a clear upgrade you don't worry about how much you invested in Ramo or Berra. It's like Monahan. Sure the Flames envision him as the team's franchise center for years to come but say if the Pens came offering Crosby or Malkin, Monahan is out of here.

Feaster's body of work here is mediocre at best here. Why is it silly to call for Feaster's head when he hands out a two year, one-way, $2.75M contract to Kari Ramo who might not even be the team's 2nd best goaltender next season? Feaster's tenure here has been a massive failure and he's been wrong much more often than he has been right.

That's highly debatable. I certainly wouldn't characterise his entire body of work here with the Flames as a "massive failure". He has had some good moments and some bad ones; all in all, not nearly the disaster that you have described.

Anyways, I'm tired of this discussion. My point in wading in to it was to affirm that big changes at this stage in the team's course is akin to an over-reaction. Maybe Feaster is let go at the end of the year, or in two year's time (which I doubt will happen, given Burke's public support for him, and the generally fairly positive reviews of his work in recent months), but right now it is premature and uncalled for.

That was a disgrace. I'm mad as hell and this loss really stung.

BUT

It's to be expected. Just because some of us aren't all "oh well, rebuild etc." doesn't mean we can't mad at a bad team losing at home to their equally bad arch rivals after out playing them for forty minutes.

Isn't it well known the Flames were in on both Schneider and Bernier but the asking prices were higher because the teams were in the same conference?

Lucky bounces saved the oil. Berra is still having trouble adjusting to the speed and caliber of shot that players posses in this league.

Our D with Smid, in this viewing, isn't much different. We can expect more nights like this. This team has very little NHL talent. Let alone contending level talent. Top end Talent at every position is very difficult to acquire. First Line forwards, rarely are available. Top 2 d, even more rarely available. Goalies are a little easier to acquire outside of "star" goalies.

I actually wanted to lose this one as I want a top 3 pick and this game cemented that destiny IMO. If we can't hold off a team like that then what are they really doing this year? Oh yeah, it s a full rebuild. We can expect 3 more years of this at least. I'm ok as long as they buy into the system and play hard for more 60 min spans than not. We have a long way to go, but this is the time you watch for individual developments as much as team. Mono is going to be a stud. Berra has pro potential. But he needs to realize that better prospects are going to be pushing very soon.

Ah welll, those pitiful fools in the capitol got a dodgey win. to me, they have more to be afraid of with their rebuild being in year 4 with only minimal signs of contention.
