A rational person can't think it would be ok to print. It's why only 1 of 20 people reported it. 19 people, for whatever there reasons, felt it was in there best interest to let it go.......1 did not.
Nothing else needs to be said in this matter. Either Batchford is way smarter than his peers and the by the looks of things the majority of the public and simply knows better, or Batchford missed something the rest of his peers picked up on and is in the wrong. I'm going to put my money behind the latter.

When in bed with my wife and I cut one loose... I will ALWAYS blame the dog.
And as someone in their 50's toilet humor is still funny. The funniest story I ever read was the one where this guy was out at a restaurant and had the worst case ever of diarrhea in the restaurant washroom... wasn't that posted here on CP or did I read it elsewhere?

I love that off all this, the person that seems to care the least is Thorton. He probably chuckled when it was posted, made a note to be careful next time he's in Vancouver, sent a couple texts to his buddies about the funny quote that somehow was published, and took a nap.

Which is honestly how I wish EVERYONE had responded to this, including the Sharks organization.

I feel like this is definitely a circumstance where he could have gone to Thornton and asked if he could quote that. There's a video on TSN of Jamie McLennan talking about this and he states that there were numerous times where reporters would come to him and ask if they could quote a particular comment. Obviously Botchford took the comment and saw dollar signs, so he ran with it.

Your quote of Botchford is not word for word. Review the tape. Since you are arguing semantics, you have changed the order of his words. I didn't think the line "Then he engaged in a debate with Farhan, Farhan turned around to defend himself and Joe launched into his joke in front of everyone." changed anything of his quote. I agree Farhan probably did this. It doesn't change the fact that Botchford said he had never heard a line like this, and he clearly has.
The TSN panel asked the question. They can make it about whatever issue they want to. Maybe they had a follow up if it got answered in a specific way. To me, it looks like they were trying to catch Botchford in a lie, and attack his credibility. I think that's fair. They asked him a specific question and he dodged it.

I enjoy how you don't care about facts, because they don't go directly to your point. I didn't take anything out of context. If you put the Farhan sentence into the whole response, it literally changes nothing. It does not change the context one bit. I don't think the situations are vastly different, because they both involved a reporter, in Vancouver, being asked if they played the game, a joke was made and Botchford was involved (yes, he was involved in different capacities) Bad argumentation? I didn't know that "Jesus tittyf*%@ Christ" was much better. I'll use that in the future.
I did read where you identified the difference was tone. I stated you can use any tone you want, it still doesn't change it. I'm also not the only one in this thread to make the same point, which you've responded to.

I'm debating an incident. I haven't called anyone in this thread a name, accused them of trolling, told them that their response was a sideshow or they needed to make an effort to read. That's all you. I gave a logical, factual based response, from my perspective, that you didn't agree with. Others do agree with me. We see the overall issue basically the same, but we disagree about one part of it. I think Botchford stating he has never heard those types of comments is part of the overall issue. If he has heard them, why didn't he post them before? If he understood the difference between a joke and a serious point, and has heard similar jokes before, why didn't he post them before? I don't think you can leave out. I really believe it's a credibility issue. He tried to come off saying he needed to do it because if the other guys did quote it, he would be in trouble. The others didn't write it. Maybe they had been around longer (I don't know, as I don't know who was in the locker), or maybe they had better judgement and/or credibility. Be refusing to admit he did anything wrong, he is further damaging his credibility. I believe this is part of what you call "a real question to be discussed here that Botchford may or may not be on the wrong side of". I have made valid points for this, even if you don't agree with it.
My last sentence from my previous post was in agreement with you, that he shouldn't have posted it. I thought that was a very clear opinion from the vast majority in this thread, and from the general public. Because I didn't quote that part of your response I don't have reading comprehension?

Funny thing is that Botchford has spend all day defending himself and responding to tweets that attack him.
I have asked him on two seperate occasions now If this was deemed to be any sore of grey area, why not just ask Thornton if you were allowed to proceed with his quote as "on the record"?.
No response both times it was asked.
He knew what he was doing and was just trying to stir up #### before the game.

I don't disagree that this is such a circumstance. I was just saying I'm not sure where the line is, and what makes X situation one where you have to double-check with the player, whereas in Y situation, you don't. Is it if they use coarse language, or if they say something controversial (not sure I agree with either of those), or just when they make a comment that isn't a direct response to a question asked to them specifically? I can get behind that last one.

It would be nice. I'm ok with the media pointing out that what Botchford was in the wrong reporting it, just so we can understand context and how much of scum Botchford it. But it was such a funny, 'who cares' quip that it really should have been relegated to 'Thortons funny, Bochford can't be trusted'

Yes, in the one interview I saw with him, just the way he said his peice, you could tell he was annoyed with Thorton telling people to shut up, and I think this was his attempt to embarrass Thorton...................which has gone badly for him.

I don't think Iggy's ever scored 4 in a game and at 36 years old he probably never will. So I think we're pretty safe.

He scored four against Phoenix back in the day. I remember because it caused me to stroke it.

Did Botchford have the right to report it? Yes. These comments were for 20 microphones/cameras, they are ON THE RECORD. The claims from Sharks PR staff that these are off the record are just false. If he didn't want them out there, he shouldn't have said it to that many people or he should have told them not to run with it after. Joe has to know better. He's got some blame here.
Should Botchford have rolled with it? I'll say no. Botchford's not in the business of making friends in the game, so I get that he wanted to go with something out there, something outside of the box. But I think he needed to use some common sense and realize that something like this will blow up and players around the league would catch wind of this and his relationships going forward would take a hit. Can he repair this? Sure, but not with his stance that he's got going right now.
