I don't mind this trade, but I think people are way too eager to call these recent trades successes.
None of them have panned out yet. Taking risks that sound good at the time is worth nothing in itself. This could end up being just a wasted draft pick.

Yup, and many have claimed that Feaster has turned things around since O'Reilly, but we have really have nothing by which to gauge any success yet. I think the praise is premature.
Wait and see.

Yeah, we don't know how they'll play out but except for Russel, every move Feaster or Burke have made has gotten us bigger, which is good.

interesting move.
so much better than the "have to get liles contract to get colborne" type discussions we've been having here.
stajan
backlund
monahan
horak
Galiardi (he was going to be tried at C, no)?
Colborne
Uber-curious what the flames roster announcements look like by tomorrow!

some quotes from various pre-trade articles. sounds like he worked on leg strength and skating during the summer
Quote:
Colborne similarly boosted his training regimen, focusing on leg strength. He’s been able to add more than 10 pounds of muscle to his six-foot-six frame, a welcome addition for the 23-year-old whose speedy metabolism has prevented such gains in the past.
“I dropped to 210 at the end of last season and I came into camp at 214,” said Colborne, who says he is well over 220 now.
|
Quote:
In a drill where two players were required to skate around cones in the circles at one end of the ice before racing for a puck at centre ice, Colborne won the drill all four times, including once against Jake Gardiner, one of the fastest skaters on the team.
"I finally had a healthy summer and I could do all the things I wanted to do," Colborne said. I did a lot of stairs this summer and worked on lactic acid tolerance. For a big guy it is so huge on a long shift to be able to stay down in your crouch and stay powerful. I feel confident now. I'm heavier, but I have way stronger legs. I feel so much more solid on my skates."

Colborne spent this summer training with power skating instructor Barb Underhill to become faster

He beat Jake gardiner in a race around the dots. He won all four races I guess (last year). His skating is by all accounts now good.
The knock I keep reading is that he just can't put it all together

Well, hopefully he can Surge forward and become the top 6 forward he was drafted to be. I've got high hopes for him.

End of the day stajans spot will be open around the trade deadline. Monahan had a solid preseason but he's still young. No need to rush him.

Funny when I saw Colborne was available, thought with Burke here, that he would be a natural trade for us (and now that I see the Boston connection - doubly makes sense). And as a hockey trade, it is fantastic - cannot have to many big centres to see who is the best... better odds of finding the next great guy... and if you end up with too many great centres (is this possible) you can move one for another asset...
This trade seems to be all upside (even if it turns into a 3rd round pick going the other way).

is the pick going the other way conditional on :
colborne getting X points
AND
flames make postseason
or is it:
colborne getting X points
OR
flames make postseason

the 2008 #16 overall pick traded for the Flames 4th round pick.... Might that turn out to be Stempniak at the deadline?
The 2009 #13 overall pick needed Cody Hodgson.
Colborne and Kassian seem to be of similar quality and potential.
Imagine if the Flames traded Baertschi for Colborne after Baertschi breaks out with 16 goals and 33 pts in 63 games.
The Flames are setting the ground so that Gaudreau doesn't have to look for another team.
Jankowski, Monahan, Glencross, David Jones, Colborne are potential line mates that Gaudreau will do well with.
I look for Hudler, Cammalleri and Baertschi to exceed exceptions this season as they will have more room and will be able to play harder with their larger linemates creating space for them.
Gone Iginla, Cervenka and Tanguay.... replaced with Colborne, David Jones, Galiardi.
Colborne is that much more NHL ready than Knight.

Look at our division we need to build a team to compete with the massive centers in our division.
I like the fact our center group are good at face offs and lots of size. Size doesn't mean hitting some through the boards. It means being able to absorb hits and not fall right down, protect the puck, be hard along the boards and win battles. Matt stajan for all the great things he's done in pre-season isn't going to compete against joe Thornton, anze kopitar, Ryan Getzlaf, henrik sedin.
Low risk move could pan out, might not.
I still think from what I saw in pre-season monahan is our best center.

From this Sun article...
Quote:
It becomes a third-round selection if Colborne collects 10 goals or 35 points this season and the Flames punch a playoff ticket.

Definitely biased here... got to know big Joe very well when he was in Camrose for two years when I worked with the junior team.
I never saw anyone who works harder off ice than Colborne. I expect this ame desire and work ethic is in place.
He has all the tools to be great - I had expected to see it put together before now.
I will instead hope Flames were lucky that he hasn't yet, and Joe can be great going forward.
Love this deal! Welcome home Joe!

I assumed he meant when the Hawks first won the cup the only key guys on the team 30+ were Hossa and Campbell (30), plus Jon Madden (36). Of course now they are in year 5-6 of the new "era" they have old guys.
But I think getting rid of everyone over 30 is a bit much so not sure that is the way to go because Chicago had a young team and won once.

There is a part of me that wants Monahan to stay all year because he is our top building block moving forward and looked damn good in the pre-season. Having said that I also don't know if it is worth burning a year of his elc prior in year 1 of the rebuild. Look at what the Oilers did with their top picks and now they are paying 2 of them $6M this year and another $6M next year with nothing more than a 24 th place finish to show for. I have little to no doubt Monahan will be in line for $5M + after his ELC expires so going back to jr this year, getting traded to a contender, dominating the world juniors is best for both the team and player.
The flames have several young centers they can take a look at this year as well. Colborne, Knight, Reinhart, Horak, Granlund
