We may have gone past it now, but are people in this thread seriously taking the position that what this woman said was not racist?
Assuming the guy is in fact of asian descent, how can it not be racist? I agree it's not swastika-on-a-synagogue type racism, but she only would have said it because of his race.
Of course, perhaps tomorrow a blond, blue-eyed path walker will ask her to leash her dogs, she'll refuse, and respond with the "go back to whichever Scanadanavian country you're from". In that case, it would be fair to say she's an equal opportunity hater.

Yes, there were several posters saying it wasn't racist. I couldn't believe it, either. Melbridgeman, Ranchlandseller, being two of them.

Well let's no get carried away and try to follow what was actually said.

I'm also wondering if "go back to China" is actually racist?

The thread has gotten so ridiculous regarding being on topic. Beating of women, dogs, lakes, when you can and can't hit people. I think it's fair to wonder if it's actually a racist comment.
Here's a blub from the always factual ( ) wikipedia that actaully supports what I'm curious about.
Quote:
Racism is usually defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races and that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior.[1][2][3]
The exact definition of racism is controversial both because there is little scholarly agreement about the meaning of the concept "race", and because there is also little agreement about what does and doesn't constitute discrimination. Critics argue that the term is applied differentially, with a focus on such prejudices by whites, and defining mere observations of racial differences as racism.[4] Some definitions would have it that any assumption that a person's behavior would be influenced by their racial categorization is racist, regardless of whether the action is intentionally harmful or pejorative
|
Re: bolded part #1 - I didn't hear anything from stupid woman implying an asian was less desirable, or inferior to anything else.
Re: bolded part #2 - that might imply stupid woman was being racist? As she noticed a difference, ie. the ###### filming wasn't white?
Re: bolder part #3 - not really sure, I don't think stupid woman was implying that he was doing something particularily "Asian" and categorizing him as such. Or... Maybe the fact he was using a camera she was implying he was an "Asian"? I know some people think it's funny to joke that Asians are always carrying cameras and ready to shoot. I don't know anything about that though. I'm now worried merely typing those words might imply I'm a racist.
I have already been acused of saying it wasn't racist - which has shocked some readers who simply can't believe that could possibly happen.

Ah, the old "I wasn't saying it, I was just wondering". Jon Stewart did a hilarious piece on that, making fun of Fox news.
"Fox news, they never outright claim or state anything, but they're always "wondering" about things and "finding things interesting".

"Just Asking the Question" = "JAQ".
I read something yesterday that referred to it as "JAQing off".

Okay, let's put it to rest then, with a simple yes or no.
Do you think that lady telling that guy to go back to his country was racist? No qualifiers, no "wondering". Just post either yes or no.

How can you put something to rest when you've questioned it only 24 hours earlier? I'm seriously wondering, is it actually a racist comment?
My "see it as you wish" is simply my brushing aside something you've suggested, that I'm merely using "wondering" as a scapegoat. If you can't accept my response that I'm actually curious and instead come back with jokes and parodies regarding fox news and some late night TV show then I'm not going to respond. You don't know me, nor will you ever, so you have no basis for accusing me of such things. If my one clear response wasn't enough to appease your first accusation then nothing will and I'm moving on.
I've already said it's a brutal and harsh comment and she's an idiot. I'm not sure what your implication of my use of wondering is implying, that I support what she said? That I think it's okay for her to say what she said? Racism is a bad thing for sure. But I often wonder if those championing against these 'minor' (not to say any racism is minor) racist events or occurances often lose sight of the bigger picture because they get blinded by a big nasty racism angle. As Cowperson said earlier, it's a lot less than it used to be. I think Calgary is a great place and I personally don't think I've ever witnessed anything particularily racist. As such I'm not sure branding the ignorant with the racist badge is particularily fair. I'm not sure this ignorant idiotic lady deserves the same fate as the moron young guy who posted on his facebook "Eat Shiz and Die Alberta's" regarding the flood. And I wonder if those calling it racism are accurate in their definition of racism as their was no superior/inferioir angle which is how I always interpretated racism.
Anyway... Too nice of day to continue posting after lunch. Time to go back outside. Enjoy...

Sorry, I should clarify, I didn't mean to imply you were racist, I was just genuinely surprised that anyone could not see what she said as racist. To me, it's pretty clear-cut racism, that's why I was surprised.
Also, I've recognized that I've been kind of a **** on CP lately, so I will make sure to tone it down and just have mature, friendly discussions, going forward.

Cool story bro, good to know because "it's a lot less than it used to be" we get to handwave racism now, going to have to use that one when I'm walking my dog without a leash in suburbia.

I think what matters is if the recipient of the comment finds it racist.

Ranchland using your definition which I think is too limited, here's my answer.
It's racist Because in her opinion because he is Asian he has less of a right to be here (ie inferior).

Wow - could you be any more original? "Cool story bro". Or intentionally obtuse?
At what point did I suggest hand waving racism? In fact I distinctly went out of my way to say no racism is minor. But hey, don't let any of that get in the way of dropping your one liner meme as a reply.

That's a perfectly reasonable way to interpret it and something along the lines of answering the question I posed.

Here's my view on the whole racial slur issue. While I have no doubts there are racist people of any race out there, oftentimes, in a heated argument, some people throw out a racial slur not because they are racist, but because that is usually an insult that will get the most angry reaction from the other person. The goal of most people when hurling insults is to try to piss off the other party as much as possible.
Is this woman a racist? She may be, but she may not be either. It could be that out of anger, she tried to use an insult that she thought would get the most rise out of the guy, and that is to directly attack his race. I'm not saying what she said is right, but I'm actually more offended by her refusal to leash her dogs more than the slur.
And this is coming from a Chinese guy.
