If Iggy's own zone play does not improve this upcoming playoffs, i doubt that any of the serious contenders will be looking at him going forward.
I think one of the talking heads said it best when they said that at the deadline Iggy was the most sought after player. 2 months later he was not on the top of any contenders list. Sure he signed with Boston but thats because Alfie went to Detroit. Same could be said for Pitt wanting to see if they could re-sign Dupuis.

Lol @ people surprised the Bruins would take Iginla after he "snubbed" them. Exercised his contractual right to pick his team. In the business world people don't let emotions run their businesses. If Iggy is there instead of Jagr Bruins stand a way better chance to win that series, not a knock on Jagr he was solid out there but the bruins needed some pucks in the net. Iginla gives them that

Go Iggy!!
My hope for the year:
1) Jarome Iginla wins the Stanley Cup
2) Jay Feaster is fired
3) Stanley Cup Winner Jarome Iginla signs a one year deal and retires a Calgary Flame.
One can dream.

Iginla played for the Penguins, they have a jersey commemorating when he did that, knowing it was a short term thing. Buying a jersey is about being a fan, it isn't about resale value, they aren't buying it hoping to flip it later on at a higher price, it's not real estate.
I used to be a huge jersey nut but I haven't been in a while... it's still cool to see rare jerseys that people got. A St. Louis Blues Gretzky. I love seeing an Iginla #24 jersey from his first couple of seasons.
All jerseys go out of style at some point, but the longer they have these the cooler they become.
They aren't poor suckers, they have a piece of hockey memorabilia that represents when one of their favorite players played for a certain team. Now they'll add a Bruins jersey to that collection potentially.
Suckers!
|
Fair enough. You have a good point. I just don't like Pittsburgh and wished he went to the Bruins in the first place. Then I could have been the sucker with the Iggy Bruins jersey.

1.8 M for 1 year
I must have missed where he was a career Bruin. This is obviously a home town discount like Yzerman's last year in Detroit.
All the comparables just took a hit . If Iginla is worth 1.8M plus bonuses then someone like Raymond Mason is worth 500K with bonuses.
We have the First loophole of the new CBA. I really hope that the Bruins get punished for it down the road.

I think vets like Iginla get a pass when it comes to the NHLPA and GMs/agents using them as comps. He's chasing a cup. That's the factor that nullifies his salary/contract as a comp. Pretty clear.

Especially when 10 GP out of 82 bumps that up to $5.5M total.
He's hardly taking any kind of discount; he just allowed it to be structured so the Bruins could afford him, similar to Alfredsson in Detroit.

Don't get too excited by the $1.8 M people. He only need to play 10 games and he makes $5.5 M. It's just structured that way so Boston can get around their cap problems and sign Rask.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,956,667; BONUSES: $5,937,500
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $3,165,833
looks like 3m in space for a 3rd line winger and a 13th F, with Tuukka getting 7 and none of Iggy's bonuses spilling over.
|
Maybe I'm just misreading what you mean, but I believe you got that wrong. The bonus cushion allows the team to spend up 7.5% (4.8M this year) over the cap when bonuses are applied. So teams with at least 4.8M in performance bonuses could take advantage of the cushion and reach a cap of 69.1M (applying all bonuses as "earned").
Rask getting 7M and another 3M spent on a 3rd line winger would put the Bruins at ~69M.1 cap including bonuses (while counting Savard as a cap of 0 since he'll be place on LTIR). The Bruins have 5.93M in bonuses (from Iginla, Hamilton and Krug) so any bonus earned in excess of 1.13M (5.93M-4.8M) would roll over to next year. So if, by some crazy miracle, all bonuses were earned that would mean the Bruins would take a 4.8M hit on the cap alone next year.
There's no way that I could see the Bruins bringing in a 3M player along with Rask. Even if Rask+the last couple players to round out the team came to a combined 8M that's still a risk of having nearly 3M bonus cap be applied next year.

There is no consensus in the draft outside of the top few selections and even this year there was no consensus at the top either. No consensus means there is no board.
MMF couldn't be more right in this case. Draft consensus is a fan and media generated myth. In reality the 30 teams have very, very different lists and opinions. Shockingly different to anyone that believes in the "board" myth.
Let's take the 2012 draft as an example. Guess who we had #1? Galchenyuk. Guess who the Oilers had #1? Yakupov. Guess who the Leafs had #1? Morgan Rielly. Where's the consensus? Where's the board?

Glad it wasn't Vancouver or Edmonton and I guess Pitts has too much tied up with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Neal, etc.
I'm still cheering for Iggy to get his cup and he'll fit in better with the Bruins style of play. I don't see him on the Bergeron line as that is their shut down line, so with Krejci, I see him putting up another 30+ goal season.

I like Iginla, still think he has something to give, but I don't like the deal. It's going to matter how good of a deal Chiarelli gets Rask under but going into the season above the cap with easy to obtain bonuses and having to worry about injury and callups now pushing them right up against the cap, that's a pretty big gamble.
Even if the cap goes up a ton, if all that extra cap for next year just goes to paying off the bonuses of the Bruins, they're left with having to re-sign Bergeron and re-sign/replace their number 2 defenseman in Seidenberg, Iginla and low contract players like Bartkowski and Krug with the same amount of money they are making now. Bergeron's getting a raise, and Seidenberg could make more as a UFA (especially with the money we saw thrown around today). I don't see the need to handicap themselves next year when players like Hamilton will only be better, they weren't in an absolute must win-now mode. I suppose it's close to the Chicago model, win-now retool after, so that could be way worse.
But if Chiarelli can sign Rask to a sweetheart deal and not have to worry too much about the bonus spillage, maybe this was a great move.

The canucks had 7 million in cap space with a bunch of players to sign - why do people keep thinking Iginla was ever in the cards
