Those were dark days, and by dark, I mean they were carved out of obsidian, painted matte black, wrapped in light-proof shrouds, dipped in special secret dark sauce, fed to a black cat, which was fed to a black dog, which was fed to a black panther, which was put in a black gunnysack with 100 pounds of coal dust and then inserted up the rectum of a black bull, in an unlit drift 1,000 feet deep in an anthracite mine, after midnight on a foggy night with no moon.
In those days, the Calgary Flames consisted of 23 Young Guns and no bullets.

Excellent post. I'll also add to those posters that appear to wish to trade away all the vets and ice an all-rookie team - the Flames have been there, done that and it was pretty much horrible.

3) Draft either Lindholm or the Russian
Drafting Monahan was the last on the list. Not because do I think Monahan is a bad player, but doesn't scream "franchise player" and I really wanted us to draft/trade for one.
However, reading up on him, reading his interview, I'm starting to warm up to him. Hopefully, he becomes that #1C we've been looking for.

1) That's a weird thing to be upset about, as you admit it was never going to happen
2) It would have cost more then just that for Seguin and I worry about why a team is giving up on such a young player so early
3) Well, if you're upset about this then you're upset about this. I question why though. In the Monahan-Lindholm debate thread I wanted Monahan but Lindholm is a top notch prospect too. Fans tend to get too focused on their guy and the tunnel vision blocks out the positives of other players.
As for Monahan... if he develops he'll be a number one centre. Not in the Crosby, Malkin, Thornton, area. But more along the lines of Jonothan Toews. You won't see Monahan pop 50 goals and 100 points like those guys but he'll be a 30 goal, 70-80 point guy... all the while being the leader you need, playing physical, playing the two-way all situations type guy.
He's an excellent building block.

1) I just meant if they fell to 6th, I'd take them instead of Monahan/Lindholm. However, odds of that were very low. I'm not upset about this, just an order pf preference.
2) If the rumored deal was true, I'd do that deal in a second. Seguin has much higher ceiling than SM. And JG is still a longshot.
3) I'd rather we drafted Lindholm or VN, but I guess each of us have their own opinion.

But that was a totally different era. The Flames couldn't sign any quality free agents to complement their youth and couldn't resign their best players once they were UFAs. It was a tremendously uneven playing field.
I don't think anyone is saying that we should only play youth but I think many are saying that we should fill as much of our roster with young talent and use free agency to fill in the temporary gaps.

was excited at the prospect of getting seguin like any flame fan, but monahan is looking like his upside could be about that of seguin or maybe a bit less. I'm happy we didnt give up monahan and other assets to get seguin.

Yep, remember when I moved out her in 93 from the big smoke and thought, finally moving somewhere where there's contender hockey teams and playoffs. Little did I know...

I'm just happy Carolina picked Lindholm and left Monahan for us. I would have been happy the other way around too, as long as the Oilers didn't get to take the other one. Last thing I want is to have a "should we have taken X because he looks better on the Oilers" debate going on for the next several years.

Avoiding the "what if" is an unintended bonus for sure.

Feaster was probably happy as well. The pick was virtually made for him. Even if Monahan doesn't pan out, no one will be able to say he should have picked the other.

Geez Don, we get it, only pick Canadian kids. At least he's predictable.
Rest of his rant:
Don Cherry@CoachsCornerCBC13m
2) a dynamite hockey player and SSM's Darnell Nurse. And Buffalo taking Rasmus Ristolainen over Bo Horvat of the London Knights. How about Dallas taking Valeri Nichushkin over Max Domi. Florida taking Aleksander Barkov over Drouin. Didn't they see the Stanley Cup Finals?
15 Canadians on Boston and 13 on Chicago. Bickell from Orono ties the game late and Bolland of Mimico scores the winner. Only European who was around was Rask. 28 Canadians in the finals. Please note where these teams always end up in the standings. Guaranteed to stay there. Mark it on the wall.

Maybe they figured that they already have Jordan Staal and so they don't need the prospect that is compared to him if all goes well.

I'm pretty shocked Don Cherry is actually on a computer typing things onto Twitter. Either that, or someone is actually willing to record his thoughts and translate them into written text, which is pretty shocking as well.
