4 year contract is what I heard somewhere. Pretty easy to see why Eakins chose Edmonton.

A 4 year deal for a 1st time coach???

Does that ever happen?

I'm hardly one to pay much attention to coaches' contracts but that seems odd to me.

In happens in Edmonton, nobody is going to touch that team with a 10 foot pole without some security.

Schultz wasn't prone to give aways at all. He was all things advertised with the puck on his stick. He just was bad without the puck with poor awareness.
He was pretty prone to some outright wicked gaffes with the puck on his stick as well as without.

I'll agree with Yak, he is defensive zone special needs, but he also did a lot of floating by the red line and was intentionally slow back.

Eakins is a hot commodity for a reason.

Then again, so was Brent Sutter. And Craig Button. We'll see how this one turns out.

I do think it is hilarious that the Oilers had to pay him a premium in years, and I expect dollars as well. They can't even get a coach to come there without paying a lot.

Well at least the Oilers got coverage on ESPN for firing Kruger over Skype. Assuming getting any media attention was their goal. Mission Accomplished!

Oh and most of the people said firing him over Skype was pretty disgraceful. There are other ways he could have done it more professionally. As a former coach himself MacTavish should have gone the extra mile and let him go in a personal manner, even if it did mean flying to Switzerland for a day or two.

Oilers get a coach, but may have lost a player...

It's actually a decent point. The Oilers got .921 goaltending from Dubnyk and Khabibulin which put them near the top of the league in team sv% yet they finished only one spot above Calgary who only got .889 goaltending.

Unless they're assuming they're going to get that level of goaltending every year (probably not a safe bet given that their next highest team sv% in the last decade was .909), they'll need to greatly improve their shot differential and their offense just to even tread water at 24th in the league. And it's not like they were a victim of bad luck and poor percentages; they had the 9th highest shooting % in the league. With a bit of bad luck and/or poor goaltending they'd have easily been down near the bottom of the league again.

I'm not sure I agree that that's something a new coach is going to fix though.

Yeah but that's the results of being hemmed in their own end and par for the course with the worst defensive depth in the league.

NMC
2 more years @ $5.5mil
20 goals, 26 assists and -15 in last 112 games over two seasons

I think you are going to be surprised, unless MacT is ready to throw something VERY sweet into the pot.

This reminds me of Eddie Sherman from Seinfeld.

Kevin Lowe: So you've been interviewed by all the clubs without coaches?

Dallas Eakins: That's right.

Kevin Lowe: How much are they paying you? I'll double it!

So just a quick question. Exactly how many coaches and GM's are the Oilers paying next year? Assuming that all these fired coaches and Tambellini still had time on their contracts.

Renney's would have expired in 2012. Although do coaches continue to get paid if they are hired to a new team? I thought that might void the old contract.

The Oilers would still be paying Ralph and Tambellini I guess.
