What else is new?
Still need to find some starting pitching for next season. I honestly think Dickey will be better next year, but nowhere near his Cy Young season. Buehrle will be dependable, and possibly better than he was this year, but not by much. Morrow is a wild card because he has trouble staying healthy. Happ was a decent 5th starter before his injury. Here's hoping he comes back strong next year. Johnson has a lot to prove and he might be back to start the year on a 1 year deal. Hutchison and Drabek should be able to step back into the starting rotation and provide average to slightly below average starting pitching. Is anyone else ready to step up? Is Romero capable of regaining his form? We'll see.
Rotation to start next season?
Dickey
Morrow* (Plan on missing at least a handful of starts)
Buehrle
Happ
Drabek
*Hutchison?
Johnson?
Romero?
That is a group that needs some help if they're going to contend.
Bullpen is good...not much needed there.
The offense is good. I would still like a guy that hits for decent average in the #2 hole, and hopefully that guy is Melky if he isn't too badly injured.
The defense needs help...mostly coaching since all the players have the tools necessary to be a good defensive group. 2nd base needs to be filled by someone who can make a big play or two and not be a liability. J.P. needs to figure out how to call a game, how to block a ball in the dirt, and how to throw out a runner...so basically he needs to learn how to catch. We need a legitimate backup catcher who can play a very good defensive game and also catch Dickey.
So next season they need to get better performances from the pitchers they DO still have, and find one more quality arm to slot into the #2 or #3 hole. Find a 2nd baseman who has a good OBP and plays great defense. And lastly...find someone to coach this team and get some better performances out of the talent.
