Canucks are going to Utica

The good people of Utica, New York, haven’t had an American Hockey League team to support since they were cheering on the Devils, starring a young Jim Dowd, in 1993.

But it appears the AHL will be returning to the Utica Memorial Auditorium next season in the form of the Vancouver Canucks’ minor-league affiliate.

Per News 1130 Sports in Vancouver, the league will vote in favor of the move on June 13.

You're right. I'm 99% sure it's short term. Just looking at pictures of that arena, it looks like a, well, a 50 year old arena. Better than nothing though.

The Calgary deal has six years left and guarantees the team will receive $5.7 million a year in revenue.But the Flames were not eager to jump. They wanted money in the form of a transfer fee to bow out of the region. A lot of money.
The Canucks weren’t willing to pay the price to buy them out, and neither was Abbotsford. Maybe that changes in the future. Abbotsford taxpayers sure hope so.
Right now, however, it’s hard to envision the Flames cutting down their asking price by much. It’s equally difficult to envision the Canucks or Abbotsford paying Calgary’s price.

It's pretty apparent the chances of a Flames farm team winning over that community are incredibly slim. It probably doesn't matter.

Yeah, this is going to be like a bunch of squatters barricading themselves in a house and the neighbourhood going to turn on them, especially since tax dollars are involved. Add to the fact they are in enemy territory.

A sweetheart deal is the only thread still holding this rope.

Well the thing is that the Flames are in the drivers seat. There's no good reason for them to move until the agreement expires. I don't see why the Flames would drop their asking price as it's not like they have a for sale sign. It's the Canucks that want what they have under contract.

Well even if nobody goes to the games the Flames still get their guarnateed revenue. Canucks have boatloads of money and simply have to get off their high horse. Is it any surprise they are operating the farm team the same as the big team? Holding their own farm team hostage because they are too proud to pay out a lot of money to a rival? Just like they did with Luongo. GM too proud to admit defeat and just peddle off the deal for little return.
