Wasn't that Gillis's offer? Which means that whatever it takes, is going to be even less than that.

Daniel Wagner (blogger for the Score and shameless Canucks supporter) thinks it's actually the other way around and has been mistakenly reported:

Dreger is basically the source for everyone else and his source is Nonis, who has plenty of reasons to spread misinformation in hopes of driving Luongo’s asking price down. Nonis can safely deny it, of course, since he’s not the one saying it. It makes it pointless for Gillis to deny it.
I suspect it’s a half-truth. It makes no sense whatsoever for Gillis to go after draft picks and a replacement goaltender at the trade deadline. If they’re not going to trade Luongo for a roster player that helps the Canucks immediately, then there’s no reason to make a trade during the season and should wait until the draft, where they’ll likely have more interest. My guess is that Scrivens and two 2nd rounders is what Toronto offered, rather than what the Canucks offered. That’s the only way any of this makes sense to me.

No, but much like Iginla, it sounds like he really only had 1 place he was willing to go. I'm sure that's changed now, but last summer all indications are that he had communicated to the Canucks that he really only wanted to go to Florida:
Quote:
It wasn’t Roberto Luongo’s contract last summer that undermined the Vancouver Canucks’ attempt to trade him, but his singular focus on going to the Florida Panthers. When the Toronto Maple Leafs, run back then by Brian Burke, were ready to negotiate a trade, Luongo reiterated his desire to play only in South Florida.
|
Luongo was never approached with a firm offer likely because it never got to that point with the team he wanted to go to.

The Globe and Mail also reported that the Leafs made that offer, but they apparently also wanted the Canucks to retain some of the salary in the deal.

That offer all included Vancouver eating some of his salary. So to take the contract completely off the books it will be significantly less...as in maybe just a draft pick.

I am guessing you never saw the presser. Luongo was asked directly why he thought he wasn't traded. His reply was "because my contract sucks", there was no complaining, just stating a fact. One think Luongo hasn't done through this process is complain, which IMO is the most impressive thing about it and actually says alot about him as a team player.

It was quite clear that he claims his 'contract sucks' in the context his tradability, not the contract in the context of making him rich in a hurry.
He is a competitive guy, and wants to play. Obviously frustrated, but both parties created a contract that tried to circumvent the cap, and are now paying for it.
Living in Van, this has been pure entertainment for me. A little respite from the pain of being a Flames fan.

Not technically correct. He could refuse his services, then the Canucks would have to waive him, and if he cleared waivers they could terminate the contract. Of course, he would never clear waivers.

Well I'm not sure what to believe, but I highly doubt it was Gilis who offered to trade Luongo for a backup goaltender and 2 seconds. Gillis has said that he wasn't looking for draft picks in a Luongo trade. Is it possible that Gillis grew desperate? Sure. But he's got some balls if he was willing to trade Luongo for a backup goaltender and 2 seconds at the deadline.
