Great point. I did not know that eligibility for for national teams was based on ethnicity alone. Thanks for bringing that up.

I don't get what you are saying at all when you look at the ethnic diversity of our own country (and national athletes). Are there only certain nations that are allowed to have different races on their teams? Perhaps you can let me know which ones?
You should have stuck with the eligibility part - this is what I got from a quick internet search.
Quote:
Qualification
A player qualifies to represent a country when:
They were born there
Their parent or grandparent was born there
They have served 36 consecutive months of residence, immediately prior to selection, and not as a student.
One country for life
Since January 1st, 2001, once a player represents a country they are bound to that country for life.
Representation
A player is considered to have represented a country when:
They are selected in the team or on the bench of the:
First team in XVs
Second team in XVs
First team in Sevens
Provided that the opposition is:
First team in XVs
Second team in XVs
First team in Sevens
And the player is:
18 years or older
And the match is
an IRB approved international tour

FIFA is more reliant on naturalization but this is subject to the naturalization laws of the country itself - not FIFA. Like rugby it is pretty much a one country for life situation.
From Canada:
DALA, Nanyak - Born in Nigeria
EVANS, Matt - England
KYNE, Jeremy - New Zealand
MACKENZIE, Jamie - Scotland
PRITCHARD, James - Australia
AN DER MERWE, DTH - South Africa
So maybe they ate smoked salmon...?

Well, all we have to do now is beat New Zealand. They'll be overconfident and lazy!

I just find it hilarious that such a Xenophobic country is so willing to use so many foreigners as players. Comparing Canada, which has an engrained multiculturalism to Japan is silly.

You risk taking a penalty if you aggressively try to take the ball. With Japan within kicking distance Canada could not risk an offside or not rolling away penalty.
The draw was very important for Canada as they now have almost clinched 3rd spot in the pool which cements their position in the 2015 RWC iirc.

I was not aware of that. What I am concerned about is national teams becoming teams of ex-pat mercenaries. How do you develop your national program, when it is full of imports?
I am not talking about ethnicity - it is a citizenship issue. Is 36 months enough time? Is there not a slippery slope?
Imagine Canada bringing in 10 Brazilians to play soccer for us. How does that advance our program?

Was disappointed in this game. They weren't making these errors till now and it sure hurt them. Dropped balls and poor lineouts and kicking problems. Even strategically they had some guys who were running very well who they didn't feed the ball too enough.
That said this still managed to gut it out. Some individual brillance covering up some goofy play.
I agree with the commentator that they would wear them down and takeover and they did to some extent.
But they dropped the ball on this one(literally and metaphorically).

Ditto. Far too many handling errors and poor discipline.
There were several occasions when they had the momentum and they were moving well and gaining ground and then conceded a penalty.
Not to mention missing kicks. I understand that kicking in Rugby isnt like kicking in Football, you actually still have to play most of the time and the quality of chicks and paycheques is significantly lower, but at the same time, some of those were from very good positions and really should have been converted.

It's not like they're totally random mercenaries though. Dala has played in Oak Bay for four years. Evans moved here to go to high school at Shawnigan Lake, and now plays for Cowichan. MacKenzie moved to Canada as a young child. DTH played for James Bay for four or five years. Kyne moved here years ago for reasons outside of rugby.
The only real mercenary is Pritchard, who has never lived here or played here as far as I know. His only connection is the fact his grandfather was born in Saskatchewan.
The way I see it, if a guy is going to make the effort to come to Victoria and play here and live here for years, he is okay to be on the national team. Mercenaries like Pritchard...Rugby Canada can do without IMO.

France are playing like crap.
I think Canada might get screwed out of 3rd.

Pathetic effort.
Although as history has told us time and again, the French have rarely been commended for commitment to a battle when the going gets tough, and prefer to take the easy way out.

France is getting worked over. I wonder if Canada would have had a shot at them if their squad was a bit deeper.

Nah, the French have once again spit in the face of honor and decency, likely dressing a weak lineup. They knew before the game the only way they wont advance is if Tonga wins and scores 4 tries, which was even more unlikely then Tonga beating them.
Over now, Tonga wins 19 - 14. The French mockery and embarassment cost Canada an automatic qualifying spot (and an HUGE hit to the program in Canada, as all the federal funding, better exhibition matches and planned next 4 years are down the drain) for the next World Cup. Truly disgusting from the French.

With France's last minute try, they lose only by 5 so they get a bonus point.
Thus, even if New Zealand dress their Under 17 7's squad against Canada and Canada scores 4 tries and wins, they cant skip ahead of France for the impossible, but justified punting of France out of the WC; they are through. Canada has to win to pass Tonga for 3rd now. Disgraceful.

That sucks. Canada deserved 3rd place and I figured that they had earned it. I suppose that the tie with Japan didn't help them here and now it all hinges on NZ tonight. I would love to see NZ give away a game to us (in some ways) but I just hope that Canada can keep it reasonably close.

sacre bleu!
England vs Scotland was a hell of a match though. England scores a try in the last 3 minutes for the win, but Scotland had to win by 8 so they were going for it the entire time before then.
England looks to have suffered a couple concerning bumps and bruises including Wilkensen.

I'll post predictions after its all set, but there is no way France gets by England, let alone makes the final.

Good news: Canada actually had the lead at one point.
Bad news: All downhill from here. Hopefully we manage to lose by less than 50.

ya...not exactly unpredictable, but still disappointing. Hopefully the boys can score a try somehow and come home on a high note.
