Seriously, he's one well layered villian, easily one of the most interesting to come around in a long time. I spend times thinking he's pure evil, to thinking he's just a nice guy being smart in a vicious business.
But yeah I agree his plan would suggest he's trying to end the self destructive behavior.

I loved the way it ended, with Hank questioning the fast food receipt (or whatever it was) with the chicken logo on it.
Am I the only one that doesn't really find the replacement guy all that intimidating? I know we haven't seen much of him, but I found the other guy more menacing than his replacement.
I really enjoy the Mike character. He was a good edition.
Breaking Bad is really good at those music montage scenes. I loved the two of them.
Episode would have been perfect if we had seen a little Saul. Otherwise though, awesome.

This episode was a bit weird. I wasn't completely surprised that Mike may be taking Jesse out to be his next sidekick, but... I wonder why Gus initiated that plan. I know he sort of needs him alive so that Walt will continue to work... but in the earlier episodes it sounds like Gus would have been happy with crappy meth being manufactured, so at this point couldn't anyone replaced Walt and Jesse?
Walt's blitzed diatribe at dinner sounded like he was maybe aware of what he was saying. He might be hoping that Hank will lead the law enforcement to Gus and take him down, assuming that he is actually Heisenberg. Walt would want this to get rid of the looming threat of Gus hanging over his head when he eventually decides to retire or not from meth cooking.
The video montage reminded me of those Saturday Night Live skits of Toonces the Driving Cat.

That was kind of my point before the season started about Jesse being expendable from Gus' point of view. He needs Walt, all Walt needs is an assistant. Except after last nights episode, sort of proves he doesn't need an assistant at all, other than for the fork lift operating.
I'm not sure of Gus' plan either for Jesse. I thought initially it was to pull him back from the edge, but why would he care? Is he trying to turn him against Walt? That's really the only thing I can figure that could come from this new job responsibility for Jesse.
I'm not sure I buy into Walt wanting to lead Hank to Gus during the dinner conversation. I think he was drunk and he's arrogant and he didn't like someone else getting credit. I suppose he could now spin it that way though, now that Hank is back into the case and about to knock on Gus' door, but I don't think that was initial intention.
I don't know what Toonces the Driving cat is so I don't know if you are agreeing or disagreeing with what I wrote.

True, but it's possible the great Heisenberg had given the recipe to others before his demise. Same product doesn't mean that Heisenberg isn't dead, just that the recipe isn't. But yes, I suppose it would keep the investigation into that particular drug ring open.

I can't see Walt purposefully turning Hank onto himself because it implicates his Skyler if he gets caught.
I agree with the point made earlier in the thread... the way Hank talked about the genius of Gale seemed like a tactic to see how Walt would respond.

I don't think it's that, at all.
The topic was brought up because they wanted to move the discussion from Walk and his gambling. Walt Jr was the one who brought up "that case you're looking at, with that crazy singing guy". Hank then starts talking about Gale, and the camera focuses on Walt the entire time, at this point it's just Hank doing his thing, talking about a cop story. Walk then gets annoyed, more so as the story goes on. He gets arrogant and interjects himself into the conversation because he's been knocking back the wine pretty heavily at this point.
Hank was just telling a story he was asked about, Walt's ego got the best of him.

I can suppose that Gus's intention is to split the team of Walt and Jesse up, sort of like you were alluding to, I think. Walt discovers he can get along okay with any other assistant, and Jesse now believing he has more abilities than Walt allows him to utilize.
Hank must be suspecting something though, he still has that look of skepticism whenever he talks to Walt. The unintended consequence of Walts arrogant spiel might lead to the end of Gus, but it would be interesting to see how Hank will deal with it if he learns what Walt is doing. Would he protect him or use him or just turn him in eventually. Hank vs Walt might be next season, I think this season might just be the demise of Gus and rise of Walt.
Re: Toonces... I think I was suggesting that the high speed driving montage was comical looking. I don't know if it was intentionally campy looking or what. Just didn't look like their normal high quality cinematography style.

Another thought,
Can Walter use Hank to his advantage? Hank gets Walt and Gus into a room and in return Walter keeps paying for his medical bills and whatnot?

You're probably right... he just seemed to be laying the genius stuff on very thick. The WW thing in the previous episode felt the same to me. It felt like Hank was playing dumb.

This was definitely one of my favourite episodes to date. The one thing I found hard to believe was Gus's setup to change Jesse's attitude. It seems way more likely that Jesse would've just driven away, or not have noticed the guy approaching him, or just sat there apathetically the way he did when Mike abducted him. It doesn't seem like a very logical plan for how calculated Gus usually is.

Unless Gus thought the opposite outcome was also acceptable.

Personally, I think Gus is trying to make Jesse feel like a hero so that he feels invincible.
It's clear that Mike and Gus see Jesse as a major liability and are only keeping him around because they don't want to aggravate Walt, their goose who lays the golden eggs. If Gus can pump up Jesse's ego enough, his bravado and his new reckless attitude might be enough to get himself killed without raising Walt's suspicion that Gus had a hand in it. I also think Walt will see through it though and it will be the catalyst that ignites the war between Gus and Walt that we all know is coming.

I think Gus did it so that Jesse would stop being so disaffected that he no longer turns his place into the dirtbag party headquarters. Gus is probably worried that Jesse would get pinched for something small by the cops and then roll over on Gus.

The old "bitter" car wash owner may be a concern for Walt. I can see this guy being very suspicious of Walt and looking for revenge.
Season 4, Episode 6 – 8/21/2011
Cornered
Walt meets up with Bogdan, the disgruntled car wash owner. Walter Jr. pushes the purchase of a car and eats cereal. Jesse, meanwhile, continues to team up with Mike after putting in his hours at the superlab.

100% convinced now that there is going to be a massive incident this year caused because of Walt's pride
"I am the one who knocks" was a great line
best episode of the year in my opinion

I liked the Bogdan "as is" moment.
Shatters the frame, takes the dollar, buys a coke. Massive!
