With a flat cap and the potential of +25% escrow I can't see how NHL GMs proceed with the same pattern of spending.

The flat cap mean that almost every FA will be getting less than they were hoping.

I think we could land Vatanen on a short term cheap deal.

I would really like Vatanen on a 2/3 year contract, if we end up letting both Brodie and Hamonic walk.

If any players coming into Canada from other countries (US and elsewhere), do they need to go through the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine period? Or they are exempt because they are special and above everybody else?

All quarantined under the federal and provincial recommendations. Its why you haven't seen Lindholm on the ice yet.

I personally don't understand the Gus figure even in the context of a growing cap... he's fine but not a 6 mil a year player at all.

I don't think all six of the defenders listed were ever available for Ward to use at the same time. I could be wrong considering it was months ago.
|
Pretty sure they were because it was a regular topic in game day threads.
Regardless, the primary issue was Hanifin-Andersson as the second pairing (regardless of who was available to slot into the 3rd pairing) and Ward only did it a couple times at most, and never two games in a row that I can recall.
And for that alone I give him a failing grade as a head coach.

Yeah, I will be very interested to see how Ward handles the lineup when they are back on the ice, and to see what Treliving does with the bench in the off-season.
It's definitely his most important summer as a GM.

No, we never had everyone healthy at one time.
Feb 23: Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Kylington, Stone, Yelesin
Feb 25: Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Gustafsson, Forbort, Stone
Feb 27: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Feb 29: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Mar 1: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Mar 4: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Mar 6: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Mar 8: Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson, Forbort, Gustafsson
Giordano and Hamonic were both injured prior to the deadline. We acquired Forbort and Gustafsson at the deadline, then Gio came back a game later. Hamonic never returned. Hanifin left the final game of the season injured I believe.
The season-long debate was always around why in the bluest of hells was Hamonic playing ahead of Andersson in the depth chart. Pairings should have Gio-Brodie / Hanifin-Andersson / Kylington-Hamonic. Andersson is better than Hamonic is today, and investing more ice time in him now will only make him better going forward.
As a side note...I watched a lot of game highlights today. This team really isn't very good. I understand why there's so much conversation around what could happen in the off-season, because the team really didn't give us a lot of reasons to believe that they're anything special this season. Add in the previous year's disaster of a playoff, I understand why Friedman speculated earlier this season that major shakeups could happen if they don't prove something this year.

Is that really necessary? A simple response to a well-meaning question will suffice, or perhaps no response at all since the the answer was already politely provided by dammage79 above.

Isn't asking questions exactly what you are telling them to do? That's kinda how you learn stuff

It was a well-meaning question. But was the "are they special and above everybody else" really necessary?

Trying to justify all the futures dealt for Hammer by playing him like the "reliable top 4 dman" he was advertised to be when he was on the block? He's not great, and probably bottom pairing caliber right now, but if they play Hamonic enough minutes in important situations then maybe they can make themselves feel okay about all they gave up to get him. That's just how I see it.
Andersson without question has surpassed him, and Hanifin-Hamonic has been a mostly terrible pairing for some time, so... I just don't see what else explains the lack of adjustment and stubborn "hammering" on that square peg.
