People really don't get that the Canucks are the only team for whom the tournament is just the start of their training camp? They bring AHL players because they're going to be in main camp, which is in the same building, starting right after the tournament ends. That's why those guys are all there.

Technically tomorrow but likely won't be on the ice until Thursday/Friday.

They start their training camp by beating up on teenagers?
Pathetic.

I like the thought of starting Gridin in the AHL providing he can handle it.
Could be in the NHL by 20 at that rate.

Gridin to the AHL would be a much better outcome than the Q. Even guys who put up stupid offensive numbers in the Q don't seem to gain anything from it.

It certainly didn't expedite Pelletier's development any.

Kerins and Zary spent their D+1 and D+2 seasons in the AHL with the Heat due to the pandemic. It doesn't look like that hindered either player's development.
Gridin heading straight to the AHL might not be a bad thing if he's in Calgary with the Flames staff keeping a close eye on him to make sure he's working on the right things.
If the AHL isn't working out, how easy is it for the Flames to re-assign Gridin to the Q in the middle of the season?

I don't see much positive coming out of any "Pelletier did this so Gridin can't do that" type of discussion.
You have to find the best fit given the circumstances for each player.
Gridin came over the US as a Russian teenager and has had to grow up quicker, and fend for himself sooner than CHL kids (as a rule). He may be more ready to play in the AHL than the average prospect.
Plus teams bemoan the lack of options with 1st rounders from the CHL. He has the options. Use them if he's ready. Don't if he's not.

Do you recall what Hughes looked like at 18? He was a goal against, waiting to happen on every shift.
To me (so far anyway, he's still only 18), Parekh's best comparable is Hughes. And he looks to have every bit as much ability with his skating, edge work, and playmaking. But he has only played against CHLers, where he can do anything he wants - let's give him more than a few days here, to learn what he can and can't do against better competition, before we start getting disappointed in how he looks defensively.
As for Makar, he is a unicorn, and is the only defenseman in the last 50 years with whom you can legitimately compare to Bobby Orr. Let's not use him as a benchmark for the poor kid.

3 games? That’s 2 more than some people normally give on CP.
Seriously though, anyone know an 18 year old? They are still physically developing, never mind the adjustment to the next level. One thing about committed 18 year olds though, you have to manage them to help their development, instead of making it everything everywhere all at once.
I enjoy the young stars as a concept, but to pretend that it’s anything other than friendlies and ice time for young players is way overstating it. It’s a chance to play and have management and coaches see your game.

It's going to be incredible to have both Hughes (Parekh) and Makar in '27.
