Anything less than being found guilty on all charges will result in massive rioting and destruction. I feel bad for the jurors.

We all do you're not special. But ultimately it's up to the jury to decide if George was murdered.

At least this one is easier on the jury than say the Trayvon Martin shooting where I think a rational person could easily be enticed by the reasonable doubt (myself included), mixed with legal concepts of stand your ground that provided wiggly room.
With this one, I can't comprehend how anyone could find him not guilty of the third degree murder charge at the very least.
Quote:
Whoever, without intent to effect the death of any person, causes the death of another by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life, is guilty of murder in the third degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 25 years.
|
Like even if you believe the cookey-racist doctor that it was the carbon monoxide poisoning (ignoring that the only one who died from it happened to be the guy being crushed) then I still think you need to fault Chauvin for not moving him despite protests, clearly passing out and eventually dying.
Like I'm not saying it's a conclusion, but anyone saying not-guilty to all charges isn't thinking rational and has some severe bias and probably removed from reality in some sense.

If I'm a juror I find him guilty of all charges and let a judge give him at least the minimum 10 years for 2nd degree murder and 10 more for the other 2 charges. 20 years seems about right for this asshat and hopefully it sets an example to all the cops who treat black people like cattle.

All it takes is what? One Juror to hang this thing up with reasonable doubt. The jurors cannot even think about the effects of a verdict in terms of the destruction that could happen in the community. Its great for me to say that and pretend the system works in a vacuum, because its likely to have an effect in their deliberations.
What happens if the jury can't reach a verdict?

What happens if the jury can't reach a unanimous verdict?

If disagreements persist, the judge may declare a mistrial on one or more of the charges. The prosecution, in this case the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, would then regroup and decide whether to retry Chauvin.

Think if I were guilty of something I'd be happy to employ Eric Nelson. Valiant effort given the circumstances. Tried to brainwash the jury by saying 'reasonable police officer' 25 million times, whereas this is exactly what an unreasonable police officer would have done.
Edit - on second thought, he didn't really go into the types of counts his defendant is on trial for. Guess he's going for carte blanche acquittal? Don't think that's going to work

The judge overseeing former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin's trial in the death of George Floyd said Monday that Rep. Maxine Waters' comments could be grounds for appealing a verdict in the trial.
"I'll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned," Judge Peter Cahill told defense attorney Eric Nelson on Monday.
Waters on Saturday night had called for protesters to "stay on the street" and "get more confrontational" if Chauvin is acquitted in Floyd's killing, comments immediately seized on by Republicans who claimed that Waters was inciting violence. The California Democrat said she was in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, to show her support for protesters amid ongoing protests over the police killing of Daunte Wright and to also support his family.
"We've got to stay in the street and demand justice," Waters said to reporters, according to video posted on social media.
"We're looking for a guilty verdict and we're looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd. If nothing does not happen, then we know that we got to not only stay in the street, but we have got to fight for justice," she added.

The judge said in effect he trusts the jurors are not going to seek out or hear any news so they didn't need to be sequestered from the beginning. But then he said the comments by Maxine Waters could be fuel for an appeal. Confusing.

I think the Judge can’t say he thinks the Jurors have ignored an order or that is grounds for an immediate mistrial, but if it comes out they were influenced it could be a mistrial.
I am shocked they weren’t sequestered. I would think if any jurors heard of the story of the expert witnesses house being the target of vandalism/intimidation could easily be used by the defense as influencing the jury. I think there will be years of appeals whatever happens.
