If injuries keep anyone out of the opening day lineup I expect to see Bancks, Escloet & Patterson (in order) to be the top 3 "call ups" up front and McKenzie to be the first brought up on the backend.
The Flames don't use the ECHL to send their players to rot, Troy believes that the ECHL is a good place to get confidence and play decent competition, not a punishment. It's a numbers game. That being said, doubtful Ferland gets sent to ECHL.
They can't be sending Ferland to Utah. The ECHL is where players go to rot.
if his conditioning isn't up to par, which it doesn't sound like it is, he will most definitely be sent to the ECHL. Ward uses it to help conditioning and improve a players confidence. If they play well there he will give them a chance in Abbotsford, he did that alot last year. Also as a 1st year pro starting a season during a lockout, the ECHL will have better competition than in the past, much like the AHL will.

There's more to consider about what makes a good hockey player than just line drills.
From what I've heard, in actual play, Ferland has done an adequate job.
Ferland is a long shot at best to every see NHL ice. If his conditioning isn't up to snuff he is even a more long shot. Perfect guy to go down to the ECHL - he's years away.

In a year where the team is extra deep due to legit NHLers being there (Baertschi, Brodie) and possible NHLers being there (Bouma, Nemisz, Horak, Aliu) a rookie like Ferland might have to start in the ECHL. There's no problem with that IMO and it certainly wouldn't be an indication they are giving up on him or letting him "rot" as you say.

No real surprises from what I've read.
Cameron - needs to rediscover his scoring touch
Howse - ditto and reported in poor shape again
Martin - border line talent?
Patterson - works hard but it's not enough
Tuzzolino - ?
Wahl - in the dog house
McCarthy signed to what appears to be an AHL contract for now. He looks to be in much the same situation as Kolanos was last year and may be useful for the Flames if we ever get started.
