I dont think the city can both maintain population growth and significantly slow expansion. As it stands now the city has done a fairly good job at increasing density in the burbs. If you compare any new community with the comunities built in the 70s or 80s they are significantly denser then they used to be. They could do a better job of integrating commercial space into these communities but outside of the core and the 100 year old communities the burbs density is better than other communities.

agreed. Calgary is never going to be NYC, but at the same time, it makes sense to start thinking for 25 years into the future.
The thing that kills me is that the ring road was conceived of 25 years ago...and it would have been awesome if it were done at that point. But it was put off until now...
same with the LRT - originally the idea was to put it underground for the downtown at least. But the leaders then nixed the idea...now we are redoing all the platforms anyways to increase the amount of LRT cars that can fit between the traffic lights? Underground, you could have 8 cars in a row without a problem during peak hours.
i am glad that the city is moving forward with transit oriented design though, and Brentwood will be interesting to watch in the future.

If we had buried the Ctrain, it would have been so expensive that we wouldn't have as many stations as we do now. The choice was between a subway that served a limited area or an above-ground LRT that served a much greater area. The city government at the time made the right call.

I agree that the right call was made. Edmonton, by comparison, decided to bury their line in downtown. Even with their recent expansions, they're still nowhere close to the system that Calgary has. Interestingly, even when/if the train goes under 8th Avenue, 7th Avenue will still be used for some of the lines above ground.
Anyway - about this bridge... I haven't been able to make it down there yet because of a sick baby at home this weekend. I am encouraged to hear that there's a good vibe around the bridge and it seems to becoming a bit of a centrepiece for the area.

Only when the CTrain police are there making sure you buy a ticket (which they do in the summer).
Funny story that's OT: I was standing on the platform to go north and a transit cop going south yelled at me across the platform to prove my fare. I gave him the stink eye and pulled out my wallet to show my pass, and then he made me pull the pass out of the sleeve and "move it" so it caught the light to prove it was real. A week later he tried to do the same thing, but I had my iPod on and so I just stared down the track for the train and bobbed my head like couldn't hear him. If you want to check my pass, walk your lazy ass on over to check it, don't holler at me like I'm playing stickball in a Brooklyn neighbourhood.
And yes, a buddy and I took a walk across the bridge for the first time this afternoon, after getting tea in Kensington. A lot of people out with their dogs, so it was nice to socialize with those too.

The French didn't like the Eiffel Tower either. They said the best place in Paris is from the tower because you can't see it. Now it has people visiting it from all over the world.
Why would I want the bridge to be used a lot? I'm not going to use it if it's going to be overcrowded all the time.
Tell me the bridge is crossable without major crowds and I will gladly go for a walk once in a while.

I'm still working on this issue. I wanted to be the first (well - co-first) but I have a feeling my window of opportunity is closing.

I took a drive by it today, and it looked nice. But to be honest (and I giggled when I discovered this today), it looks like one of those chinese finger traps.
Everyone google "chinese finger trap" and I think you'll be surprised at the similarity.

You see this thread is like a möbius strip. You keep following it and it wraps back into itself like there is some rift in the space time continuum.
This post was actually made 2 years ago.

I don't think he was saying it is any different than Calgary, just offering another example of a major city that is 1 price to go any distance.
Chicago is the same, 1 fare to go any distance.

Went downtown yesterday evening with the wife and walked over the bridge and around Prince's Island. Love the slight grade separation bewtween the bike/pedestrian sections. Much safer than the bridge from Prince's Island Park to the curling rink, which is like a racecourse after work during the summer.

Anyone else seeing a Todd Mcfarlane superhero cartoon where the hero can weld and caulk using his junk?
