SCOOP: Sam Mraiche, owner of the firm that imported meds from Turkey, is a part owner in two private surgical facilities that last year were negotiating deals with inflated rates compared to competitor, according to documents

Scoop inside the scoop: AHS's internal costs for some procedures are far less than what it pays some private firms for the same operations.

Actually not a scoop …. The Breakdown reported this as part of the original skybox story. In fact, Mraiche’s company (or one of his employees, I forget which) is the one that registered these numbered companies.

Geezus Christ, there is so much smoke and fire with Sam Mraiche / MHCare it’s off the damn charts now. The RCMP needs to investigate all of these shenanigans and Marlaina needs to step down.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the UCP is the worst government in Canadian history.

My question is why is no one looking into the LRT contracts as that is obviously happening. Probably in the arena deal too.

I think for the same reason the Alberta Energy Regulator is run by a former oil executive. It’s as if this supposedly populist government is actually a bunch of corporations in a trench coat.

Or the person that actively worked at AHS in procurement while also working at MHCare.
The levels of corruption here are off the ####ing charts

Also, I think we can all agree that the NDP "CorruptCare" name for this scandal is dumb.
I get why they're doing it, but the name sucks, is not catchy, and does not speak to the enormity of the problem.

Do they? I don’t know enough about this but my Understanding is a hospital is built by the government and AHS operates the hospitals. So that initial capital outlay for the Hospital would not be paid for by surgical fees. I could be completely wrong though in how the accounting works.

Who would you rather have running the AER? Do you have an issue with a Doctor running the College of Physicians or a Lawyer running the Law Society?

I dont know either but AHS has a Minister in charge of it so I look at them as part of the govt.
No matter how much ds wants to make it seem like they arent.
I guess it opens the question of why are there private companies operating in the public system and why would govt money subsidize their capital spending? When the govt already has spent money on AHS facilities.

I coming from the idea of is this a fair comparison of the cost of services.
Like the government can invest in expanding public capacity or it can pay a 3rd party to do the surgery.
In that calculation the comparisons should be the cost of adding the capacity AND the cost of the surgery vs the contract cost of the private sector. I have no idea from reading the article if the comparison they are making is reasonable or not.
In general I’d rather invest in permanent capacity
