Celebrated Square Root Day
|
All the focus on the actual play aside, the CFL is a gate driven league and the gate has eroded to an extreme degree. BC was a 25-30k team, Edmonton was a 30-40k team, Calgary was a 28-33k team, all have cratered in the past decade.
Everyone will give you reasons for each team, but at the end of the day this league is much closer to serious trouble than many fans like to admit.

Ticket prices and bad teams are couple of things but TSN's tv contract is definitely the biggest reason imo. I remember growing up, Stamps games were blacked out same with all other markets so you had to go to the game if you wanted to watch it. I bet if you correlate attendance drop with blackouts lifted, this is where the attendance drop spiked.
Now you can watch it at the comfort of your home, don't have to worry about insane ticket and concession prices.
The NFL has tv contracts too but its a spectacle especially wth single night games and fantasy football/betting. Even if your team is not playing you are watching the game as you've likely bet on the game or props.
If the Stamps are not playing, i'm not watching CFL.

The TSN contract saved the CFL. At this point it's what keeps the league going given the sagging attendance.

I imagine the TSN viewers skew very old. CFL is very popular with seniors it seems to me so that viewership is eroding too.

This game isn't quite as bad as Colts - Broncos last night, but it's close.

The Riders might have the worst o-line that I've ever seen.

Fajardo has been sacked 25 more times than the next closest QB.

Riders in pretty much a must win game tonight get shutout in the 2nd half. That's a shame.

So, there is a chance Riders will miss the playoff?

A good chance at this stage. The Stampeders will determine the fate of the Riders. The Stamps last three games are against Hamilton and 2 x Riders. I don't see the Stamps losing to Hamilton so it will come down to Hamilton's final two games vs the RedBlacks and the Riders last two games vs the Stamps. Riders have to finish with more points than Hamilton so if the Stamps sweep the Riders they are likely done and even a split may not be enough if the Ti-Cats sweep Ottawa which is very doable.
Kind of crappy for Dave going into the last two games knowing that finishing hard likely means his brother is getting canned in Regina. Dave's a competitor so I don't think he will lift off the pedal but probably a bitter sweet thing if he sweeps the Riders in the last two games.

Norm!

I hope he shows no mercy.
Blow outs both, and then goes and laughs in his brother's face before giving him a loving set of noogies, while screaming "Stop hitting yourself"

I guess it's not surprising, but still disappointing that there are Riders fans out there lamenting the release of Garrett Marino and saying that is the catalyst of the downward spiral this season.

I do think he played a big role in their demise. They were 4-1 and you had Marino trying to end players careers and Williams spitting on players. It’s clear that their thuggery manifested itself in the locker room and organization from a head coach unable to preach accountability, a locker room with idiots, and management not smart enough to nip it in the bud before things spiraled out of control. Looks good on the organization if you ask me.

Argos looking to do the Stamps a solid today. Stamps likely need to win out and have the Lions lose today and next week at home against the Bombers for a chance at 2nd place.
