Caught by who. Is the city going to hire people to monitor dog parks and go door-to-door poking into back yards?

Pitbulls or drugs?
I didn't get either with my neck dragon.

Bylaw? You don't think a $100k fine is enough to deter 95% of potential pitbull owners? Naw, Sliver was right, it's hard don't try. Cliff's calling card.

I got a staffordshire terrier with 3 girls at home. No issues. Is the plan for the city to euthanize my dog or just ban from a certain date on? Would like explain why my kids dog has to die or leave the city for no reason or fault of his own

There is no city plan, so you can drop the hypotheticals, other than maybe the one where hypothetically, your dog attacks your child or someone else's. Oh, right, your dog would never do that. It's the other dog owners that are the issue.

But ultimately, you are responsible for bringing a high risk animal into your house, so if the city insta-bans them, that'd be on you to explain to your children your own choices.

First of all, it would be absurd to impose a $100k fine - zero chance that would stand up to a court challenge. Fines for banned breeds in other cities are a few hundred dollars. Because proportionality is a thing in the legal system.

Laws themselves only change the behaviour of law-abiding people. To change the behaviour of the kinds of ######s who have vicious pitbulls, you would have to actually catch them.

It’s like drinking and driving. Law-abiding people don’t do it. And making the punishment more severe isn’t going to stop the people who are still doing it. What stops drunk drivers is catching them. But that’s expensive. And since the city only has so much money to go around, they’ve made the calculation that taking 50 more drunk drivers off the road a year isn’t worth diverting millions of dollars a year to check stops from other programs.

Maybe city council will decide at some point that dog attacks are a serious enough problem in this city to warrant increasing the bylaw budget by a million dollars a year to enforce a breed ban. Or maybe they’ll cynically bring in a ban as theatre, knowing they don’t the resources to enforce it - governments do that sort of thing a lot.

When breed bans are brought in, they typically have a grandfather clause so existing dogs can live out their natural lives.

Is a 100k fine not proportional to the risk of life altering injury and death? Fair point, lets make it a million.

Could Siamese cats be included in the ban? Those things are psychopaths.

Can we even use the term "Siamese"?

The most difficult part of enforcement would probably be the risk of violence from the pit bull owners if confronted.

You could have a reporting line. If you see a pit bull, call this number sort of thing. I had to call animal control before when I saw an injured coyote. They were there within 10 minutes to catch it. The same thing could work with pit bulls, but again, not sure bylaw officers would be eager to enforce it given the risk. They would need police there to back them up probably.

Why did you choose the breed?

How did you consider that the consequence of a mistake in raising your dog is much higher than with a different breed.

the solution is very simple, and it's the same solution to gun problems.

Make owners get insurance against it hurting people. Insurers will bankrupt pit bull owners in short order.

This putz is back in the news. Of course he has more dogs. Of course they are more pitbulls. He should have ended up in jail the first time.

He looks exactly like I thought the idiot would look like.

"The feds broke into my rehoming family's home and took Dibo and Kallie and threw me in jail."

Hey, moron. Feds means federal agents. Your ass got busted by city cops.

I hope he spends good time behind bars.
