What is a realistic timeframe for a battery to last? My wife has a 5S, had it about 3 years now and suddenly the battery life has gone to crap. She has no interest in ungrading to a newer phone ($$$) if possible so we are thinking of going the replacement battery route if it makes sense. Wondering it if it truly is the battery or if Apple has pushed out software updates that are essentially making the phone useless now.
Assuming she's upgraded to iOS12, in Settings > Battery it will tell you whether the phone is running in "peak performance" mode. If not, this is Apple's way of saying "we are slowing the phone down so it doesn't crash due to power issues". Apple used to do this without telling people, but now it is a "feature".
If it is not running in peak performance mode, then there will be a noticeable slowdown. You can toggle the setting manually, but you may notice more crashes in cold weather.
I replaced my battery in my iPhone 6 about a year ago for $60. It was not running in peak performance mode any more, had a reduced capacity, and was crashing in very cold weather. The new battery fixed the crashing, lasted longer, and sped up the phone.

I've had the 7 for about a year and a half and when I upgraded to iOS 13, my battery has been doing weird things. Started with depletion quickly (eg: using it for 10 minutes will result in ~20% battery depletion). Then sometimes when you plug it in, very quickly it seems to charge up a bunch. Then the last 5% will take about 40 minutes. All in all the battery life has gone to crap. I had the 5 for about 5 years, so to feel this one happening after only a year and a half was puzzling. I didn't find much googling, but I wonder if we're experiencing the same things.

That sounds like the same behaviour her phone is showing.
I had a similar issue with the battery, I think it was one of the cells that crapped out so basically it'd say charging.. 12%.. 13%.. 73%.. Reverse for use. Replacing the battery fixed it, I did it when Apple was offering the cheap battery replacements.

Just finished upgrading my late 2009 iMac from 4 GB RAM to 12 GB. Added an SSD as well ( in place of the DVD drive, which wasn’t working anyway) and currently clean installing 10.13 High Sierra on it.
I’m getting AirPods, and just wondering from those who have them whether a phone case with space for them is a good idea? The one I can see online seems a little flimsy, but I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts or experiences with these?

Nah. Those cases are cumbersome.
I ordered some Pro's over the weekend, as my Gen 1's, have terrible battery life now.
