On the plus side I can finally justify the borderline absurd number of socks I own to my partner.

Well...I discovered that my mom's neighbour, who has been out of town had a burst pipe in their basement that has been gushing countless liters of water for the past 2 weeks.

Good stuff.

Don't people shut their water off when out of town?

Or have someone check in? Two weeks? Good luck with that insurance call.

I turn all of the taps on and then leave. Cant have any problems if the water is just running constantly!

Just admit you didn’t consider the many cases of people experiencing tens of thousands of dollars in catastrophic property damage! Apologize! Now!

Our idiot kid was in our basement suite and the garbage grey plastic pipe to the sink next to his bed let go in the middle of the night. Blasting water out, very loudly, and filled the basement up with a foot of water and he didn't wake up. Wife goes down because she could hear it. Like a wave pool down there. Sleeping beauty idiot. Pain in the arse but got paid out for a bunch of crappy Ikea furniture down there that was practically worthless and not sewage water so not to brutal a clean up.

Pipe for this is laid out just north of the Rocky Ridge YMCA heading toward the vet school and the jails. I walk my dog out there and had no idea what the construction was for until today … have a sign up and the pipe laid out. Might have been there for a while, haven’t been out due to Christmas and the cold weather.
Came to the thread to ask about it and answer was already here

No, virtually no one does this. Most people don’t know where or what their S&W is.

I'm pretty diligent about it in the winter.
In the Summer I'd probably have to be more than 3 or 4 days to think about it.

3 to 4 days in summer? What does this imply about winter? You're shutting off your water lines when you go out to dinner?

I frequently leave town for a week to ten days and I never shut the water off. I have someone there every couple of days to look in, and feed the cat. I assumed this was standard practice.

If I have someone coming to take care of my cat, I always show where the electrical panel and water shutoff are. If no one is coming by and I'm gone more than a couple days I shut it off. Mine is at the bottom of the stairs with a 1/4 turn valve, so it's pretty easy. I know leaks are unlikely, but it's a quick easy thing.

If we are going away for a weekend or longer I shut off the water. Takes 5 seconds, seems like a no brainer to avoid disaster.
