Andrei is the better player, yes, but he and Radulov caused problems for the Preds. He bolted back to Russia not long after.

Yeah, there's certain problems that are just too big for a team to look past. If I remember correctly him and Radulov stayed drinking until 4 am with a playoff game the next day.
That's not just causing problems that is simply too much at the NHL level to overlook to have two of your top performers drunk, early in the morning of a playoff game with all the revenue on the line.
I remember thinking that was insane when I first heard it. There's staying out and drinking after game a with no game the next day, or even staying out a tad late during the regular season, but good lord.

I'd love Pokka on this team, but I don't think Chicago will use him as sweetener to get rid of a guy like Bickell. Pokka could easily be playing in their top 4 next year, he's that good. I think there is some team out there who would trade a late round pick for Bickell, as he's basically a more expensive and more talented Bollig. He'd be very useful to the right team.
I like the idea of dangling Granlund+2nd to improve the team's defense though. I wonder if Granlund+Wotherspoon+2nd would have any value to poach 2015's version of Johnny Boychuk (assuming one is out there).

Brad Treliving doesn't sound too interested in trading Tyler Wotherspoon.
It's fine to drum up trade scenarios but let's at least attempt to work within the confines of what is publicly out there in terms of information.
Treliving sounded like he knows Wotherspoon is going to be a force in camp and I really think he intends for Wotherspoon to be in camp.

Colborne had the best faceoff % on the team this year.

That's not saying a ton because the Flames were terrible in the dot this year. All the centers need to improve.

Wouldn't expect too many big pickups this offseason. For one thing, I think treliving is very aware that all this cap space can disappear very quickly especially with guys like gio, Monahan, gaudreau, hudler, Russell, etc. due for big raises very soon. Also, I think he has a better indication now than he did last summer as to how many prospects are NHL-ready or very close. Guys like Bollig, Raymond, setoguchi, and Diaz were picked up to both create competition in camp and because management didn't expect guys like ferland, Bennett, jooris, a Johnny, etc. to be ready for the show. I think treliving will look for more guys to be ready to make the team out of camp. Hence, I don't expect any big signings or trades for the flames this offseason.

In the event that a new and young #5 is aquired, I think a guy like Tyler Wotherspoon will become trade bait. It's not necessarily a bad thing, if he's traded for value. It's how successful organizations rejuvenate themselves.
There are only so many spots to go around and Wotherspoon will be waiver eligible by 2016/17. It's going to be Baertschi all over again unless Tyler can grab the number 6 spot and run with it next season IMO. In that case I guess Engelland is our new #7. I should add I am very confident management will bring in a long term solution to anchor the third pairing next season. Maybe Wotherspoon's new partner?
Or Engelland's?
Or Schlemko's?
Or Morrison's?
Or Culak's?
There's lots of possibilities, but you can't get too attached to any one player. There are only so many spots. Ideally, you keep the best and trade the rest.

I should add that Treliving strikes me as very pragmatic. Even if he makes a statement about Wotherspoon in May, 2015, I don't think it has any bearing on whether he trades him in the next 12 months or not. It's all up to Tyler to force Calgary to keep him in the fold. Anything said to be the media is to motivate the player. I have faith that BT will make the right move when it comes to managing our assets, even if it means losing face with some fans. The Baertschi move proved that. It cannot be understated how ballsy that move was (I'm sure he didn't want to trade him to Vancouver! ). Pure asset management right there and it will happen again and again, to many of the top 35 CP prospects.

Radulov had a very different take on the events in question:

Two sides to the story?

Their peak and overall skillset was pretty similar. Andrei is 2 years older and peaked about 2 years earlier. Sergei lasted an extra year in the NHL.
I don't really get why Andrei would think he could cut it or want to come back because I thought both were pushed out with mutual sour grapes.

Nope. He may be a decent faceoff guy, but aside from that he's the opposite of what the Flames want or need. He's old, really average sized, not physical, defensively challenged, a centre who shoots left, and will want a payday. No goals and 3 assist in 19 games with the Hawks. A healthy scratch in the POs until two games ago.

^^Chicago got fleeced for Vermette
So much hype around him at the trade deadline is why Arizona got a gnarly return for him.
I wouldn't want him on our team, basically Backlund but the thing is Backlund is better offensively and has more heart to play for the Flames.

I said this when the hype was around him at the trade deadline but Vermette is really just Matt Stajan with better faceoff skills.
And he is going to want $5 or $6 million per season.
Not a huge fan of his at all, and certainly not a guy you want to overpay as a UFA.

The UFA pool is so shallow this year, so a team looking for a UFA is going to overpay. Vermette is going to get paid, and I don't want the Flames giving him a contract unless it was only for a year (which he won't do).
