If the Flames cost of retention was higher then market / other teams would they not just involved a 3rd team to do the retention and agree to the deal ?
Clearly just negotiating tactics or NJ is the team wrongly

A playoff series against a team like the Rangers based on the amount you can charge for tickets is probably worth two playoff series in revenue. I think that's what he was getting at.

Has a third party ever retained on a contract with multiple years left without dumping cap themselves? It is one thing to retain to move your own player but to tie up a retention slot for another team for two years would have to be expensive.

Makes sense that Conroy values it highly... I mean that's the amount that Treliving paid a 1st for (Monahan contract).

Compensation should be high if that’s what devils want. It’s not like it’s for only one year. That is huge money to retain over 2 1/2 years

If we both agree that we’ll sign the extension a few months/weeks from now, we can just tell the flames that you don’t really want to sign an extension with us. That way we can just pay the rental price for you instead of the ‘extension in place” price.”
Player: “Well, you’re the team I really want to be on and I want to win cups with you so I guess we can do that.”

A team could do this, but they never would (Bumonton not withstanding) because they would get blackballed. You have to play nice in the sandbox if you want to continue to get invited to play in the sandbox.

Maybe a hockey trade where a winger forms part of a package for a young NHL ready defenseman (since we're about to have a dearth of d-men).

That's why I think Coleman should be traded if the right offer comes along..
Even with Pospisil bumped down:
Huberdeau-C-Sharangovich
Zary-Kadri-Kuzmenko
Pelletier-Backlund-Coronato
Pospisil-C-Duehr/Klapka
Things are already crowded without Mangiapane, Coleman or a potential acquisition like Holtz included above.
We will see how it all shakes out but trading Coleman shouldn't be off the table IMO.

Mock Hanafin trade posted by NHLTradeRumors . me
Hanafin to Lightning for:
Emil Martinsen Lilleberg (player for now)
Ethan Gautier (former 2nd round pick)
Isaac Howard (former 1st round pick)
Conditional Second in 25 (becomes 1st in 26 if Hanafin signs with them)
Both the prospects seem decent.

You can’t have conditions on players signing anymore.

I have heard the Devils want 50% retention, thus the ask of Casey as compensation.

if they want 50%, asking for Casey is more than justified.

think the framework is okay and probably the best TB could realistically offer. Howard and Gauthier are their two best prospects, and even though it'd be two more wingers, I wouldn't be mad. Lilleberg is a decent 3rd pairing guy going forward I think.

It really feels like both sides are going to cave and end up being
1st
Mercer
Casey
Vanecek
Markstrom $2 million retained

So basically what the Flames want is,
to NJ
Markstrom (50%)
To CGY
Mercer
2024 1st
Casey
Is that what you think Diss?

For 50%, would the package be something like Mercer/Holtz, Casey, Vanacek and a 1st?
Edit: looks like I got beaten twice, lol.

Close. Add Rooney from our end and Vanecek on theirs. If I had to gamble that would be the end deal.

Yeah if it's 50% retention and Vanecek then I think another sweetener is required and Casey fits the bill.
That's $9.7M of total cap the Flames are eating over the next two seasons:
24-25: $6.7M - $3.0M retention, $3.7m for Vanecek
25-25: $3.0M - $3.0M retention

50% is like $10,000,000.00 (including Vanecek coming back with)... for that kind of scratch I'd almost want to insist on Nemec, Casey is a bargain for NJ if that's the case.

I'd take it and run. Taking back Vanecek isn't ideal, but if you can get Mercer, Casey and a 1st, then so be it.
