I can't believe the Red Wings get away with playing on an ice sheet that's only about half as long as NHL regulation too.

When the Wings are good, the opposing team never gets out of their own zone.
When the Wings are bad, the Wings never get out of their own zone.
Either way, the other end of the ice wouldn't get used anyway.
Seriously, they've been playing in that barn for years, and nobody has even noticed!

They really one-upped Barclay's, where the other end of the ice was still there, you just couldn't see it from most of the seats.

Is that the brother that drafts 15th all the time?

It was mentioned earlier in this thread that the property for the new arena is significantly larger than both Edmonton and Detroit's arena land. I got curious and decided to do some visualizations...
First, I used the current development permit application to identify the layout of the property. The green line is the edge of the property and the yellow line is the footprint of the building at ground level.
A couple of things to note:
The north east corner of the property is designated for future development -- likely a hotel (JW Marriott or similar) and possibly mixed-use residential and/or offices. During construction, it will be used as a staging area for the project.
The south east corner is where the practice/community rink will be located. The ice surface will likely be at the same level as the main arena, meaning it should be completely underground. It will be interesting to see what is done at ground level there.
The squared-off part on the east side of the building is where the parkade will be. It looks like there will be both above and below ground parking in the parkade.
Here is Little Caesars on the land. Note that the practice rink and parking garage are not part of the arena footprint in Detroit. The parking garage is separated from the arena by a public plaza that's about 50m wide, and the practice rink and loading docks are underground, below the plaza.
When you factor in the parking garage and plaza, the overall property in Detroit is bigger than Calgary.
Here's Rogers Place. This has the parkade, community rink, and casino all attached to the arena, which is similar to how the new arena will be set up.

A hotel is going on the other side of Stampede Trail from the arena, so I don't think they'll build a second hotel on the opposite block. Otherwise, really like the comparisons.

I saw this update from Ryan over the weekend and with everything else going on, it was easy to go under the radar...
https://twitter.com/user/status/1804032754117410922
The excavation permit was approved by the city. This means they will likely be able to start digging the hole for the arena shortly after the Cowboys tent is removed after Stampede.
Also, based on previous comments, we should be seeing some design plans for the building itself in the next few weeks. I believe mid-July was mentioned at one point, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a small groundbreaking ceremony after Stampede and release some drawings then.

A lot of city admin is dealing with the water stuff, obviously, but last I heard the hope was to get all the outstanding planning items through the planning commission in July - including design reveals.

I know a City employee on the file. She told me they were anticipating to go public (development permit submitted or approved) June or July. This was before the water main issues though.
Would imagine we’ll see some fencing, job trailers, and drilling onsite very soon, perhaps right after stampede.

Civil work is set to begin about 2 weeks after the Stampede ends. Should be approximately 8-10 months of civil improvements before the building actually gets started. As of this time there is still no finalized design plan for the arena itself nor is there a firm timeline on the release of the building itself.

From my sources from a couple months back, Flames wanted to get some tangible things for timelines announced with the City and our there for public consumption before end of June.
That would get the Flames some good PR in the hockey world at the draft, and build some excitement that the new building actually is a go, and of course feather in to the future of the Flames looking positive for draft and UFA chatter...the hockey world eyes go away after mid July so the announcement has less impact.
But as mentioned above, the watermain thing is taking the city's time and dedication, and, the extended Finals may have changed that plan timing of announcements...we will see.

I don't suspect the development and planning employees have much to do with the water situation and would likely be working as normal.
