There will be a record of all this happening. Trumplicans may not vote to impeach but future generations will know what went down.

Trump is mainstream GOP now. His opponents are the minority faction, while his supporters are probably a pretty significant majority within the base.

It's also worth remembering there are very few significant policy differences between Trumpists and "his opposition" within the party. The difference is almost purely about rhetorical style, not actual content.

So no, they're mostly not cowardly scumbags. They're not backing him just to protect their own electibility. They're with him. They're his supporters, they share his ideas.

I think it's pretty clear that quite a few people within the GOP think the Capitol rioters had absolutely the right idea.

That’ll work both ways though. Future presidents will know they can do whatever the hell they want, and they won’t face punishment for it. No matter how horrible and dangerous to their own democracy. It’s a loss.

They can, but my hunch is that they think McCarthy will deny everything. I think that there is some reporting that McCarthy is disavowing the content of the conversation.

Much like he claimed he didn’t say Trump was on Putin’s payroll until the Washington Post released a recording of him saying that.

So the concern is that he will just lie, but they don’t have a recording to prove that he isn’t.

I think it's calculated to not give Trump more of a platform and not to tie up the Senate too long so they can get on to other business.

If there was any chance for a conviction they'd call witnesses to make the case, but there isn't, so better to make their point and move on to Bidens agenda.
