Agreed. To retain on Markstrom for 2 more seasons requires the 1st as well as.

I'd imagine Conroy is acting in the same fashion that he has on the Lindholm deal.
He set a price, and if someone steps up to it ... we're done.
If not he'll wait.
He could be wrong, he may get to the finish line and the value falls out, but the market is the market. You do yourself a disservice by not setting a price, or setting one and than waffling on that level because you're worried things may get worse.
That's why I've never really partaken in what package is required to move asset X. The market is the market. He has to steer those waters and do the best he can. But he doesn't control what direction it goes in.
The big thing for me is the constant action towards what looks like a roster reset without any let up. We're getting change regardless of how well he does shedding the last two or three assets.

I think it's good to temper our expectations on a potential markstrom return.
IMO that trade is still a no brainer. We get to escape the remainder of markstrom's contract and Holtz is still a top prospect. I do hope we can squeeze more but that is a totally acceptable return. Hell, at the end of last season that return would seem totally unattainable even.
The tanev one I would just keep him rather than see executed. I think someone will flinch on tanev. Look at what stay at home d men have got in the past. Tanev is far better.

It almost does seem that NJ is the only serious contender and maybe they feel they are bidding against themselves trying to reach the ask Conroy has.

Dollars to donuts that Fitzgerald calls back again. He may wait a bit closer to the deadline to sweat Conroy a bit, but he will be back.

That part is funny to me because Conroy still has the asset for another 2 years even past this trade deadline. He has a ton of time to make the right deal for Markstrom and isn't pressed by UFA status. It's a situation where he has ALL the leverage, including salary retention, so Fitz needs to recognize that and pay the price or not get Markstrom at all. I get a feeling that Conroy would be perfectly happy keeping Markstrom and maybe looking at another trade possibility at the draft.
The Markstrom situation is entirely different than the other players on the trading block because he's not a UFA and he seemingly wants to stay here (for now). There's zero rush to trade him unless those two things change. Add in the need for New Jersey and the exceptional play of Markstrom this year, and you have a recipe for Conroy to stand pat and wait for his price. I'm betting Fitz caves in a few days and makes the deal before someone else scoops up Markstrom.

The problem with wanting to keep Markstrom now is that the seal has been broken. He (Markstrom) knows he's been shopped and isn't in the long term plans.

Has he been shopped? Or can the Flames just say, 'hey we're listening to offers'?

Part of the question I have with Markstrom and New Jersey is probably partially answered with Nashville, unless there is another goalie out there that New Jersey feels can give them enough stability in net.
I thought that Nashville was supposed to be rebuilding? I know they have been trying to unload Barrie, but I haven't heard any other rumours when it comes to their vets. Players like McDonagh (34), Nyquist (34), Luke Schenn (33), Roman Josi (33), and Ryan O'Reilley (32). Sure, Josi might be a 'forever Predator", but for a team that is outside of the playoffs right now, who missed the playoffs last season, and who haven't won a single round since the 2018 playoffs, what are they doing? I thought that they were kick-starting a rebuild? Poile was stepping aside, and Trotz was going to lead them through a rebuild?
Well, aside from the well known Barrie situation, the only other player that has made the rumour mills has been Saros. It just doesn't make any sense to me given that there are no other players on the team being shopped. This smells more to me like Nashville trying to drive down the price if anything. Even if Nashville decides to blow it up, Saros is only 28 and could still be a legitimate starter - or part of a great tandem to start Askarov's career with. I personally think that there is value in Markstrom helping to develop Wolf, but Markstrom will probably be too old by the time this team is ready to compete. If he was 28, I would make the argument that Markstrom should only be available for a severe overpayment, or it doesn't make sense to make the move now.
The only other goalie that could really be a difference maker in New Jersey that may be available is Gibson, but good luck with that. He is signed through the 26/27 season at 6.4 million. It isn't back or front loaded either, though there are no bonuses, so it is easier for buyout purposes. Anaheim is a team that has been run on a budget for years as well, so good luck trying to get them to retain on Gibson.
I think Conroy is being very savvy here. It is a game of chicken right now. Calgary has the best available goaltender on the market (I don't think Saros is on the market). Allen? Fleury? Blackwood was there already and didn't work out. Everyone else is either a backup or a question mark.
NJ is 5-4-1 in their last 10. The Flyers are 4-5-1 in their last 10. NJ is 5 points back of the Flyers who hold the last playoff spot in the Metro, but they have 2 games in hand on the Flyers. Tight race for that last playoff spot. Islanders are only 2 points back of the Devils with equal games, so there is back-pressure for sure.
Devils are 4 points back of the last wildcard spot, with 1 game in hand, and Detroit is doing well going 6-3-1 in their last 10. Devils are 5 points back of Tampa, but they have 3 games in hand on Tampa. However, Tampa has been doing well lately, going 6-4-0 in their last 10.
Jersey has a great shot at the playoffs, and Markstrom is probably the piece that gets them there. They might still make it without him, or they might make it by acquiring a lesser goalie, but for a team that has went out in the recent past to try and find some stability in net, Markstrom can offer them that for the rest of this season, and probably the last two years on his deal.
I will bet on Conroy to win this battle of chicken.

Fair point. But if the Flames are listening to offers, whats the difference really? At this point, if a potential deal with the Devils was as far along as it was, Markstrom knows they're OK with moving him. if he was in their long term plans, Conroy would simply have said no thanks to any calls.

I think that Harmin is a Canucks homer?
Anyways the thing with Markstrom is that its been leaked now, its in the open. It could cause a distraction, wasn't it reported he didn't want to know about anything until they had a deal?
Conroy should stick to his guns, but 2 things.
Am very confident the offer in the offseason will be much worse, and a good chance some teams may backoff and go with cheaper option B without the pressure of the season them.
HIs value could take a hit once our roster has no Hanifin and Tanev. We are already leaky with them in the lineup, it is going to be ugly.

Plus it's a given they are aware of the Montreal 1st specifics and how Markstrom may affect their ability to be a bottom ten team next year.
Move him now for a a solid return so you don't get into the summer, have no market and have to wait until next year's deadline all the while having Markstrom boost your team 5 spots in the standings.

It’s an advantage for the Flames to deal Markstrom now if the offer is good
They don’t need him moving forward unless they think they can still compete for a playoff spot instead of a hard rebuild

Pick is top 10 protected, they have to take Florida’s which is likely much lower
There are other convoluted conditions but that’s how I understand it

Coles notes. Montreal gets the better of the picks between Flames and Florida unless the Flames end up drafting 1-10 then Montreal will get Florida's pick. So it is important that the Flames don't draft 11-16 next year, as Montreal will be getting it (this is all assuming Florida is a playoff team and their pick is in the 20s).

Basically the Flames pick has to be a top ten pick next year unless they think Florida will be a bottom ten team. The absolute worst case is Montreal getting the 2nd overall next year but the most likely worse case outcome is the Flames pick being 11th overall.

So it makes sense to deal Markstrom now and make Florida a stronger team giving them Hanifin for hopefully next season.

Finishing so that the pick is 11th would suck as that pick goes to Montreal.
Finishing with 10th or higher is the goal.
But one little bit i just thought of.....can the 10th pick become an 11th if someone lower wins the lottery and leaps the Flames? We really want 9th or higher right?
