While I was going for the reverse jinx before, this is indeed a lesson and learning experience for Denis. This is his first tour match against someone playing pure negative, anti-tennis. You can't just go for everything playing against anti-tennis, you have to be willing to rally and remind yourself your opponent has no weapons, he can't beat you straight up with his game, he beats you by frustrating you into mistakes, so dial it back and make him play long points and don't give him the freebies he needs to win.

Lol so to contradict myself from my early complaint of the pro-Roger crowds being disrespectful to the opponent, I do hope the crowd is very disrespectful to anti-tennis from here on out. Bottom half of the draw is already at the ugly for a 250-level event, if anti-tennis beats the only positive player left it's beyond unwatchable.

Maybe Senator Clay Davis can elaborate....
Shapovalov keeps on getting trolled. The Carrena guy just seems more than satisfied rallying back and forth while Shapovalov keeps getting suckered into trying these winners landing on the line and it's costing him big time this match.
If he started playing more safe, no doubt he would have a better chance to win. Is that just inexperience? That's what the TV crew is pretty much attributing it to....Carrena is just using his experience and being smarter...

Denis just isn't used to playing guys like this. If guys at the challenger level could play anti-tennis this effectively, they'd be on tour. So yeah it's mostly just inexperience, Denis is playing like he's got to hit winners because if doesn't the opponent will take control of the point. This run has been amazing, but Denis still has fewer than 15 tour matches under his belt, he's still what amounts to a rookie. But if he can at least keep scoreboard pressure on the crowd obviously wants him to win so when the crowd turns it up, maybe Busta goes bust.

Nah if he plays safe he'd lose for sure. He needs to blow this guy off the court and was doing so until I jinxed him.

His youth and fitness could turn the tide in a long match. Might be getting hotter too as the afternoon proceeds. Edit - there is a roof.

Basically Busta isn't playing to win points, he's playing to force errors from the opponent. He's playing the part of the backboard, just get balls back and hope for mistakes. He doesn't take risks to try and end points early, even when there's a 75% opening he's not taking the chance, only when it's a wide open court will he let rip a winner. Denis meanwhile will let winners rip even if he only has a 15% opening as we can see. So basically Busta and his type are the neutral zone trap/parking the bus of tennis. All about playing to not lose, which is boring as hell.

I'll give it a shot - There are players on tours who act like human backboards, they don't generate their own pace most of the time, they take the pace of their opponents shots and just get everything back. It gets frustrating after a while and then the guy generating all the pace goes for more or tries to hit lines which usually amounts to more and more unforced errors.
Edit: Or see above (lol)
