I'm planning on getting the new iPad regardless since I still haven't got one, and I've been following Macrumors religiously lately trying to figure out what the latest iPad will feature.

This is the poster in front of the place where they will have the iPad 2 unveiling this March 2nd. One comment under the latest iPad news article really intrigues me! I never noticed until this guy mentioned it:

Doesnt anybody else notice that one side has few dots (pixels) while the other side has double the dots?!? I think we will get the retina display still!

I think he might just be on to something!!! I would infinite jizz for Retina iPad.

People read too much into things. I recall when Apple had a guitar on the invite for an event, people were making predictions based on the number of guitar strings and frets. Predictions that didn't come true. I haven't been following Apple for that long, but I haven't seen them do anything that cryptic.

No you wouldn't because a $600 iPad magically becomes a $1000 iPad with a retina. I can see a resolution bump but would be floored by anything near retina capabilities.

I'm most likely going to skip this iteration and wait for next years model. Partly because I'm not confident this version will do much for me and partly because I'm aiming for the iPhone 5 and don't have enough money.

Having a forward facing camera would be cool, but if I pick up an iPhone 5 it's suddenly not as important.

Alot of quasi mac insiders or those who have inside sources have said no retina display, a higher resolution screen but no retina display.

The macrumors thread is hilarious:

apple designed both of these visual clues that way for a reason, they wouldn't do something like that to piss off their customers, but i'm sure they thought more people would GET IT by now.

come on people, seriously! pay attention

Just bought an iPad 1 on the weekend - the 16 gig wifi model. I bought this one because it was relatively cheap with the $130 price drop after the iPad 2 announcement. I'm mainly going to use it as an official introduction into computers for my kids (beyond cheap plastic pretend laptops that are basically toys). If the family uses this a lot I'll pick up an iPad 2 as well for me and my wife.

So far it's been pretty cool, although I'm not as blown away as I thought I'd be. It seems like a comically big iPhone to me right now, so once I get over that I think I'll like it more. The youtube interface is awesome, and the Facebook one is cool as well. I don't like typing on it as much as my phone because if I'm laying down it's hard to type while holding it because of its width. Will probably get used to that as well. Browsing the web is great compared to sitting at a desk.

Anybody have a couple of recommendations (just so I don't have to sift through this whole thread) on good educational apps for a 3 year-old and soon-to-be 5 year-old? I'd like some reading-type apps where I can sit with them to help them learn to read...there are so many it's difficult to weed out the bad from the good.

Garageband came out today. IMO it is AMAZING. I've only played with it for about an hour, but I am floored by how well it's put together. The attention to detail is high, everything sounds great, it's simple to put something together if you aren't musically inclined and it's only 5 freaking dollars.

Totally buying the guitar adapter. This app is that impressive.

I'm not too sure when the switch was made, but tsn.ca is now showing video in HTML5.

Thst was pretty much the last website that I used where I was still seeing a big hole in the screen..no flash is pretty much becoming a non-issue for me now.

Does anyone have any recomendations for a good anti glare screen protector?
I'd imagine they aren't all created equal, and it'd be nice not to have to pick one by trial and error.

When I had my iPad I used this one from Power Support USA.

I found some side by side comparisons on a forum (forget which one) and it seemed to be the best at the time. It did an alright job, not good enough to be an e-reader on the train (Kindle FTW) but would cut down on glare fairly significantly. I found it did make the screen a little fuzzy, but still completely usable. It's pretty pricey though, after the exchange rate and shipping/import fees it was around $50. Wouldn't hurt to find something cheaper or even one that comes with multiple protectors.

If anybody wants gesture support on their iPad it looks like all it requires is a $5 purchase of Xcode4 (free if you're a developer).

Yep, and it worked for me with XCode 3.x

The gestures are pretty intuitive.

^^ I have underestimated both the magnets in the iPad, and the size of the grapes on the guy who decided to try that for the first time.

quick question about home shareing. The wife has been watching movies in bed now on the new Ipad and if I were to convert my movies into Itunes format would she be able to grab them from my pc on the Ipad and watch them in bed or around the house as well?

Once you add them to iTunes, yup. But I use an app called Air Video and it's awesome. You install a small program on your pc point it toward your video folder and you can watch anything in there. It will stream over 3G and it will live convert file formats that aren't Apple friendly.
