I think that would have at least settled the masses down a little.

I didn’t look at it as an independent decision by Maloney. When you have the Flames host and POHO turning and talking to the camera (audience) in the way they did? That was a coordinated PR play, just a really poorly done one.

I would only refer to myself as anti-tank because I will always associate the word "tank" with deliberately losing.
But I'm one of the people who will never celebrate losses but won't let them irritate me either because I know a high draft pick helps trying to make the rebuild successful.

People are disappointed that by all accounts, Kadri and Coleman aren’t even on the market. And they’re worried that might still be the case in March.

Should he have said maybe "we are open for business" or something to that effect? Probably. But what exactly do fans want him to say?
|
My attempt:
"It’s been a tough start—no one in our organization is satisfied with where we’re at. Our fans deserve a team that wins, and we appreciate the passion and support you continue to show us.
Our hockey operations group is evaluating everything with one clear goal: building a team that can compete for the Stanley Cup year after year. That’s the standard we're looking to establish here in Calgary. Now, that doesn’t mean we’re putting up a ‘for sale’ sign. The NHL can change quickly, and we believe there’s still more in this group.
At the same time, we’re honest with ourselves. A quarter of the season in, we haven’t met expectations, and we’re in a spot no one wants to be in. Our commitment is to make smart, responsible decisions that position this team to win—not just for a stretch, but sustainably. That’s what our fans deserve, and that’s what we’re focused on every day."
Doesn't commit to anything, but tells you the future is the focus.

That is not what the issue is.
End of the day it comes down to how many changes they make this year and what type. We all know Andersson is on his way out but who else? Do they hold onto Kadri and Coleman? People are concerned that is their plan. To run it back or try and win with this group next year.
Last year’s season skewed the direction for fans and I think they are worried the team thinks they are closer than they are. The reported reluctance from ownership to trade 35 year old players fuels narratives that have some validity (otherwise they wouldn’t be so widely believed)
So you have some fans who are totally spooked and others who are looking at it as a plan being executed and a decent amount who are unsure what is going on. The Flames haven’t made any moves to suggest they are in it to win it but fans want to see older assets flipped for futures and not just the UFA.
If Kadri gets traded the fanbase will have a better idea of the direction. It is very important Conroy gets that deal right and despite what some fans want that is not today.

GMs almost never come out publicly and say that players are on the block. So all we have to go on is the tidbits offered by insiders. That’s true of all trade rumours in every market since forever.
So should we discount all rumours about player movement and availability, or only the ones we don’t like?
Personally, when four or five credible, accredited members of the media say they’re hearing the same thing, I tend to believe it’s true. But YMMV.

I don’t know why Coleman would be number 4 on the Athletics trade board then?

That board is just speculation about who could be targeted in trades. NHL GMs aren’t out there pitching trade proposals to one another day and night.

This is totally it, and it was a great point made on the barnburner cast. They can lean in and optimize this rebuild, or they can make unnecessary mistakes like failing to maximize returns for aging assets -- which could do more to create a prolonged Buffalo type situation they desperately want to avoid.
And its not like this franchise hasn't hung on to old players too long before.
I think everyone just wants to see some indication that this team indeed knows what it needs to do and has the resolve to do it.

CJ is an insider and he is speculating that Coleman is in play. Friedman has stated the Flames are listening. Lebrun says they are getting calls but are reluctant to move him.
What reports are there that say he is not being traded?

Maybe wrong thread but following up on Boomer's rant the other day Francis with a 1 on 1 with Donny boy.

Ho boy this is going to be received well.
Anybody else concerned that we're hearing from Moloney and not the most talkative GM in the league?

Yeah I'm a little puzzled by that too, particularly when coupled with the fact Conroy doesn't have an extension yet.
Maybe this guy thinks he's showing great leadership by getting out there.
But it's a complete mis-read of the situation.

If this was damage control.....yikes. This franchise is cooked.
