You can't offer him a ridiculous contract because you have to re-up him when the time comes and that's just too much. The other option is to sit down with whoever the GM of the bruins is and lay things out for them: we could sign Hamilton to an offer sheet or we could just trade for him OR we sign him to an offer sheet and you're forced to match it and then in cap trouble and have to deal some players away so why not just deal us those players without signing Hamilton to a more expensive contract than you think you have to sign him to.
Now is the time to take advantage of teams in cap trouble, especially ones with good RFA's

Also if forcing the new GM of the Boston Bruins to make trades and match or take compensation and replace Dougie Hamilton; if that screws the Bruins over truly then no one in the League will hate Calgary for taking down the Big Bad Bruins.
They will be thanking us.

7.3 would be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. I still think Boston matches that, but it would be tight for sure. At the end of the day, we're talking about a potential elite defender, who's already a #1/2D @ 21. 6'5 - 212lbs!
I say take the gamble! A future core of Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Brodie, Hamilton, and Giordano is absolutely incredible!

If a team does choose to exploit this then it's Chiarellis fault for putting the Bruins in that position, not the GM who wants to make his team better.

so a more interesting scenario, does Edmonton offer Hamilton a contract? Chiarelli using his own mismanagement in his(short-term) favour. long-term, offer sheets usually seem to work against the team who's stuck with the inflated contract.

For some reason I can see the Oilers throwing an offer sheet for Hamilton.

I don't think there's any way the oil offer sheet anyone as their next pics are guaranteed to be top 5. Saying that, I haven't given the new management team enough time to prove how bad they are so they just might....

It's possible but the Oilers don't have a lot of free cap space and have a few positions to fill out on the roster.

Are people forgetting that the Oilers are a cap team? They can't afford to submit an offer sheet. At least not a big one, and a small one is definitely getting matched.

The oilers have 16 million in space and a lot coming off next year. They have some spots to fill yes, but it really depends what they want to do with this upcoming year.

I think it more likely that they make a pitch for Chara...and that the Bruins might bite.

Looks like they need to sign a goalie, re-sign 4 D men minimum with Schultz likely getting 3-4 million. They have 12 forwards signed and McHeyzeus coming so they might be set there but I wouldn't discount the idea of them seeking upgrades.
16 million is certainly a bunch of room to work within but they do have a ton of work to put in in terms of upgrading their roster throughout.

This. And I think it would be a good move. Not solely for on ice performance (Chara isn't what he was), but two years of Chara would pay a lot of dividends on the culture/leadership side of things. He would also be a great mentor for guys like Nurse, Klefbom, and Marincin.
It would take a bit, but I don't think it would be a huge cost given the cap space it frees up for Boston (or replacing his salary with a couple players and a smaller savings).

To be Flames-centric, I wonder what it would cost for us to pick him up? Might be lower cost if Boston is simply looking to dump salary. Our assets to deal are probably low (Granlund, 2nd rounder, Schlemko-game-signed OT puck) but what a huge deal it could be if we got him:
Gio - Chara
Brodie - Engelland
Russell - Wideman
Schlemko
Would be solid... other teams could probably bid more though.

This is the exact type of trade Treliving has said he would not make. Young assets for a 35+ player

I know this is not a popular opinion, but IMO Chara is done, or nearly done. He has negative value if the cost is young assets.
Flames need to stay on the exact course they are on right now.

I think the Bruins would match any offer sheet for Hamilton. They have cap issues but they would rather keep Hamilton than maybe someone else as they probably see him as the heir to Chara.

Don't the Oilers have pretty much 3.5 million they are going to have to add to their cap next season with McDavid alone?

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. He's completely lost it. Amazing that it happened so fast. He was a Norris finalist last year.

@IgorEronko: Evgeni Medvedev terminated contract with #AkBars of #KHL. Could mean he's going to #NHL. Best team Russia D in Sochi, 2 times world champ
