Been on that panic track since the moment Treliving announced Janko was going back for his senior year.

I think the Flames have the option of burning a contract year for Janko that other teams wont be able to do

We could start a faux rumor here and see if the national media catch on and then chuckle to ourselves for trolling the the big boys.

sureLoss would have to start the thread for that. Apparently there's some twitter bot that tracks whenever he posts a news thread here.

Different situation, Johnny didn't go back for his 4th year like Mark, Jankowski only has to wait a few months after school ends and sign anywhere.

Meh.. I don't even care if anyone eats crow, and would actually prefer nobody being called out on it. Just makes for arguments rather than discussion.
I actually quite liked the discussion around Jankowski over the years. The only thing that irked me was the 'absolute' talk. "Jankowski is a waste of a pick", "Bust", "Maatta >>>>>> Jankowski", "Teravainen >>>>> Jankowski", etc. Kid was a project pick, but too many people were so eager to label him as a bust because of it.
It is great to see his offensive numbers pick up - but when you watch this kid you really do see the offensive talent he has, even in his first year in the NCAA (remember the Elliotte Friedman shout-out after Jankowski had those back-to-back games where he just showed so much flash?).
My biggest question marks were all answered in the last 3 years.
"Can this kid actually keep his head above water playing against experienced players who are older and bigger?" - answered in the first season with a resounding YES.
"Can this kid do the same as a center?" - Again, a resounding yes the following season.
"Can this kid bulk up and play an NHL-style defensive game?" - again, YES - and his coach (who is one of the most respected NCAA coaches out there) leaned heavily on him for this.
"Can this kid go to the dirty areas and show a bit more assertiveness out there?", "Can this kid show up for the big games?" - Just look at him in the Frozen Four last year.
This year is just gravy. You watch him in the first 3 seasons, and you saw the offensive skill under-utilized by his wingers. Kid has tonnes of vision.
He is going to come out of college as a very well-rounded player. Seriously, what are his weaknesses at the moment? Other than "needs to continue developing in all areas blah blah blah" and "needs to continue adding a bit of size" - which is essentially what is said of every single prospect there ever was - he has no glaring weaknesses now. He is extremely well-rounded. He plays a very NHL-style game.
Hartley is going to love this kid I bet.
What I love most about the evolution of this thread is how it went from "bust pick, but at least the Flames can recoup a 2nd round pick for him" to "OMG, I hope he signs with us! Conroy better be getting the jet ready". Not because of the crow, but because this kid's development is going really well, and he has been one of my favorite prospects to follow because he has been one of the most unique prospects with such an interesting story to him.
Jankowski (thus far) gives everyone reason to be a bit more patient before labeling a kid a bust.
Baertschi gives everyone a reason to be a bit more patient with coaching decisions when it comes to young players.
Hopefully people are more patient as well with players likeKlimchuk, or Kanzig and Smith who also need a much longer time to develop. And hopefully nobody loses their mind because Shinkaruk is over a PPG this year in the AHL, while Poirier is only .5ppg (and let me tell you, I much prefer Poirier and would bet he has the better career still).
Jankowski still has to make the NHL - and there are still no guarantees he is going to be a player, never mind a player who will make an impact. But seriously, what weaknesses does this kid have now? Just needs to continue putting on a bit of weight. Show me a more well-rounded prospect in the entire Flames' organization right now. I can't think of any that aren't on the team already. Only other guy that I can think of is Hickey (and I love Hickey too).

I might have been one (I don't think I had such strong feelings, but wondered if it would be worth getting that 2nd round pick if we didn't sign him) but if I'm wrong, I'd be very glad I'm wrong.

Great post. Thanks.
Granlund makes Backlund expendable and Janko makes Granlund expendable. Not that you should, its just nice the Flames have so many options.
Flames are set for 3-4 C for a while. Maybe they can start him as a RW and he can be the David Jones we were hoping for.

It depends. The Frozen Four final will be played at the same time as the Flames' final regular season game.
If Providence makes it back to the Frozen Four final and the Flames miss the playoffs, both teams seasons will end at the same time.
If Providence doesn't make the Frozen Four and/or the Flames do make the playoffs, they will be able to get Jankowski signed and burn off the first year of his ELC.

Only one I can think of is driving the net HARD coming out of the corners the way Bennett and Gaudreau do. If he adds that element to his game, and he has the puckhandling skills to add it... the league will be scared of Janko.

I don't remember who they were either, but I do remember at least a few people who were just determined to run down the pick every chance they got. And just argued and argued like the everything was black and white and already decided years ago.
And it will still be at least 3 or 4 years before we really know if the pick worked out or not! I'm just excited that he's looking good this year, and seems to still be progressing up!

I think Teräväinen is much better than Markus Granlund.

I still have hopes for this guy as I think this team badly needs an upgrade on Backlund in that 3rd line center role.

I agree that would probably help his game a bit, but I think he has played with much more assertiveness and going to the dirty areas with much more regularity and effectiveness. Still room for improvement of course, but his assertiveness and propensity to go to the 'dirty areas' was a few key elements that was missing from his game in his first couple of years in the NCAA.

I have no concerns about Jankowski signing with the Flames. Calgary invested a 1st round pick in the kid and while Feaster/Weisbroad are gone the organization has continued to support him Conroy and Button are still around and the Flames can certainly use a player like Jankowski as they continue to look for size in their forward group. Flames can also sign him and burn a year this season like they did with Johnny

I would say you almost have to do so this year. He went back to Providence instead of collecting a pro-contract. I would imagine the Flames smoothed that decision over with him in saying that they will sign him.
They did so with Gaudreau which one could argue would have been a 'given', but they also did it with Arnold, so I would say it would also be expected with Jankowski. Not that I think he is a flight risk, but it I do think it definitely lessons the worries.
