By the way, there is still a massive shortage on winter tires. I would look at ordering some soon if you want them for this winter. (Depends on mfg and tire).

Seriously? I didn’t know there was a shortage, and I need some new ones this winter.

Now is the perfect time to buy winters. Well normally, now everything under the sun is in short supply or over priced.

So, how serious is this shortage? I did some digging and found the tires I want at PMC tire out of Montreal. But no discounts or promos at this time of year. So should I just get them because they’ll likely be out of stock soon, or wait until the end of the summer?

There's a shortage of everything. Except delays on everything. There is a surplus of that.

Not sure, but I was worried enough about it that I bought some new Blizzaks last week to beat the rush. If you're going to buy some anyway, definitely won't hurt to do it now.

So I figured that this is the right thread. I prefer to do my own change over as it's easy and somewhat therapeutic. I'm getting surgery at the beginning of October...will changing my tires at the end of September be too early to do it? Should I just bite the bullet and get them done at a shop this year?

Do you have someone you could "teach"?
(ie: child/grandchild/nephew/niece/friend etc.)

If you won't be putting on many miles it's fine. If you are planning road trips to Edmonton or something you might want to wait. Or it'll snow early, and you'll be ready!

I'd say changing early probably makes sense, especially if you're not going to be driving a crazy amount in Sept. Beats the hassle of dealing with a shop (since you'd need to load the wheels anyways, which is tough for a lot of folks)

I'll do a plug for tires on the run. I had him come do the tires on my trailer and it was great, didn't even take it out of the storage lot.

Where does everyone store their tires? I am running low on space in the garage and hoping to make a box to store on the side of the house but not sure if thats a bad idea given the weather. They'd be sheltered/covered from rain, snow etc but would still be exposed to the cold temps

Realistically, I don't think a couple of weeks would make that big of a difference on the wear and tear of the overall tires. I feel like people overblow the whole "warm weather will wear out my tires" thing if they're talking about changing tires a few weeks before it gets cold, or a few weeks after it gets warm. If anything, I think more often than not, it's the age of the tires that goes before the tread. At least, that's always been the case for me.

Driving through that first snowfall with summer tires puts you in the proper mindset for winter driving - easy on the pedals.
