To me the thing with Bennett, is that he always tries to make things more complicated. If just played more straightforward, drive the net with grit, like he does in the playoffs he'd be so much better.
Every time I notice him, it just seems like he's trying to deke 3 people out of their skates, and the play dies on his stick.

Dube really plays a pretty simple game. He likes to have the puck on his stick and looks for open players, or goes to open spaces himself. Tkachuk constantly playing in close proximity to the opposition and Lindholm being constantly defensively aware is just not a good stylistic fit.
Lucic doesn't hold onto the puck for more than a second at a time, and Bennett is all about open spots or rushing the opposition. That fits Dube to a tee.

The expressionless look on Sam Bennett's face after he scored the other night was very telling.

Sam Bennett has THREE points
He shouldn't be getting too excited about one goal

Bennett scored didn't over react and it's telling. My question is telling what exactly?
If he scored and excited, I bet he will come in and say, Bennett hasn't done squat all season, scored a goal and excited? It is very telling.
Looks like doesn't matter what Bennett do, it's telling.

I'm a huge fan of Bennett, but as I said earlier in the thread-he still thinks he's playing junior. He really has difficulty using his linemates.

It may be why he works best with Lucic and Dube - two guys with high hockey IQs, one of whom doesn’t need or want the puck on his stick that much. And who also like to create havoc. Bennett’s goals typically aren’t skilled ones, they are slamming the puck home from the crease, often as second or third guy in.

The 3 or 4 games Bennett played with the Monahan line he was good enough. 2 goals and fit in fine. A lot better than Simon who needs to stay away from the top 6 for now.
I'd have Bennett there or maybe try Ritchie for another game before Simon.
Bennett also looked good with Lucic and Dube so maybe a way to get that line going again even with Backlund back in lineup.

The Monahan line IIRC has the same goals for and against with Bennett or Simon.
Bennett isn’t a fit on that line. He’s better with Lucic and Dube (except I still want Dube with Gaudreau and Monahan). I guess you could put Bennett with Backlund, except I think Backlund is going to get the McDavid assignment.

That was the story before the start of last game. Then Simon made quick work of the ‘against’ situation

Yet Ritchie in a couple of periods looked better than all of them.
I don't see the problem with Bennett on line 4. He doesn't use his linemates anyways so why saddle other "good" players with his style.
He can try to skate tunnel vision through the opposition team on the 4th line without hurting our skilled players offense.

Bennett scored 2 goals in 3.5 games playing with Monahan and Gaudreau, he's the best option for that spot.

Isn't it safe to say the team is literally a forward short in the top nine?
Mangiapane can plug in on any of the three lines and they're good. Dube plays well with Lucic ... but has struggled with Lindholm and Tkachuk.
Bennett has looked good with Lucic and Dube, but so too has Backlund.
Bennett and Simon have similar numbers but don't really work with Monahan and Gaudreau.
If I'm Ward I go back to Leivo, and leave him there for 5 games.

Exactly. And it should have been Leivo. He has been slow out of the gate, but I agree, he is the one that they should be giving time to, not Ritchie and Simon.

Bennett has 2 goals with 13 and 23, Simon doesn’t have a point with anyone. His contribution to the goals is indisputable
Not all numbers are similar

100%. I see Kingston Sam Bennett every game he plays. He tries to go through his opponent each time rather than go around. I’ve never seen a player attempt to deke so much, fail and then try it again. It’s like he doesn’t know any better. He also takes too long time to read the play, ends up killing the play because he doesn’t react in time.
If only he would realize what he is. A north-south smash mouth style player who gets on the forecheck who digs hard in the corners and goes to the front of the net. If he played more like Mangiapane instead of Gaudreau, he’d be a great player. Alas, he just can’t seem to get over that 4th overall tag all these years later.

As far as I know Bennett hasn't removed his trade request he should be removed from the team not given top line minutes.

People see what they want to see.
Does he try junior moves? Yes.
But most of the time he IS playing north-south, smash mouth hockey. He forechecks as aggressively as any Flame forward, and more than most.
