Isn't arena football the second best league talent wise?

The synergies gained from a combined facility will save taxpayer dollars when the greater picture is considered.

While I think concerns regarding field-house usage are an important consideration, the majority of these issues can be solved via good design. On a smaller scale, the Jack Simpson gymnasium (which is combined with a fitness centre and hosts a wide range of regular events) demonstrates that a multi-use facility can work with minimal impact on other users.
Serious question. Why is a stadium an important civic asset?

Anyone else here go to the Rogers Place open house on Saturday (I know I'm not the only Oilers fan on this board) ? I did and came away impressed. I wouldn't say it was jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but very classy and well done. The arena bowl looks incredibly sharp with the black seating and the new scoreboard. The concourses are spacious and bright with so much natural light coming into the building. Not 100% complete yet with some finish touches needed and lots of blank space on the walls that I'm sure will be filled over time.

Finished the day off going to the Esks-Stamps game at Commonwealth. Having also gone to the Labour Game here in Calgary, I'd forgotten how nice Commonwealth Stadium is in comparison to McMahon. Being a lifelong fan of both Edmonton sports teams, I do love the fact that both now play out of first-rate facilities. But also being a resident of Calgary since '08 (with a 3 year gap in there), I'd also like to see the city I live in have the same level of amenities for the entire city (not just Flames and Stamps fans) to enjoy. It looks good on the entire province when our major cities have first class facilities to offer.

I heard the upper drink rail seats are almost 100% obstructed by the top level of seating.

Apparently they are going to have to build a little podium or something for the seats to be on so they are not obstructed.

Didn't notice that at all. We hit every level in the building and didn't see an obstructed view anywhere. We actually talked about the sight lines being really good no matter where we went - even at the rail behind the very top seat in the building. Haven't heard this yet - will have to keep my ears open.

It looks good is evidently the answer.

Interesting - hopefully an easy fix.

At least they don't have the press box oversights like IG Stadium in Winnipeg..........knock on wood.

The photo is restricted. Is there a way to view this without an HF account?

Architectual cache, drawing professional games (Grey cup, world cup, soccer exhibitions), drawing concerts, providing jobs, being a site for recreational sports...lots of reasons. The potential stadium would be used for a lot more than just 10 or so stamps games. I play touch football games at Mcmahon, I imagine a new indoor stadium would host adult league football and soccer games throughout the year. There's a civic benefit to that, and you don't have to compromise with the goofy retractable seating, fixed seating would be just fine.

People don't want public dollars flowing to this...fine. But don't act like it would be a white elephant with zero use. I believe the statement that stadiums aren't a net revenue generator but you'd have to point me to any city project that is. That's not the point of Government spending.

Anyone remember in 2006 when we got the new video screen in the Dome how Ken King mentioned it could be moved to the new arena?

Has anyone seen what ticket prices are like for the new Oilers rink?

At first glance they look super expensive, but then on stubhub looks like you can get them cheaper. Can't tell if that's just people re-selling at much lower values trying to salvage something but then taking a huge hit on the face values.

My buddy told me his seats rose by 23% (after 10% last year)

Isn't StubHub generally listed in US dollars? Would explain the lower pricing on the face of it.

No. You can fit an arena field in a CFL end zone. The first guy on the arena leagues notable graduate page (which to be fair doesn't look like it's been updated in years) is Jay Feely.

The CFL has a great base of talent - it just won't get out of its own way with garbage like challenging penalities.
