Wingers are always a dime a dozen. Defencemen are far more valuable if you need to trade someone. Look at the return we got for Russell a 4 or 5 defenceman compared to Hudler, our first line RW and Lady Byng winner.

One seasons trade deadline isn't a very good measuring stick for worth. It's all about supply and demand.

I'm not familiar with Chychrun, but most defenceman take a few seasons before they are NHL ready. Hopefully if the Flames draft him, he's close.

depends on the forward... i think we'd get a pretty great return for Bennett, Monahan or Gaudreau.

Organizationally, with guys like kylington, Anderson, Hickey, Hamilton, Brodie and jukipakka as DMen under 25 it seems like we are in good shape on the backend.

i'd take dubois, nylander or tkachuk over a dman just to find someone to play with Bennett....there doesn't seem to be anyone on the farm that is looking like a top 6 forward with some scoring upside...

either way, considering the strength of the draft, its hard to go wrong, even if we drop to 8th.

I think a really benefit to taking a defenseman would be to take some hard minutes away from Gio over the next few years. Maybe allow us to get more mileage as he ages. Letting him put in quality minutes.

and generally speaking defencemen are in shorter supply and are in higher demand, so get a better return. I'm not saying this is the case in every situation but I am saying if we pick a defenceman, that isn't a problem for me.

I'd guess Chychrun will need another year or two in junior.

Well the Oilers are having trouble trading their 1st overall forwards for an impact d-man so that should tell you something

Well there are twice as many forwards as defenceman, so that would make sense.

I just meant you can't just go by one trade deadline to gauge value. Some could look at the return for Phaneuf, Regehr and Bouwmeester and say defenceman aren't worth very much.

Not sure how I feel if Chychrun is still 2 years away. So many holes in the top 6.....

RNH or Nail?

i wouldn't trade Brodie, hamilton, gio, Anderson or kylington for either of them either...

but that says just as much about the quality of what Edmonton is trying to ship out...

who was the last No.1 dman to get traded? doesn't happen very often... but No.1 centermen don't get shipped out that often either (barring personality issues or impending free agency)

edit: hamilton? Seth Jones? doubt RNH and nail would have gotten either of those guys either...Hall might, but i don't think he is being shopped

Gotta think about the expansion draft though. If we draft a dman and he makes the team right away, who do we protect? We can protect 3 dman, so don't wanna lose one if we have 4 really good ones. If we draft a dman it might be best if he is 2 years away.

But ideally I hope we draft a top 6 forward with our top 5 pick. Hopefully it'll be a top 3 pick...

I was under the impression that, with the expansion draft, the proposed rules are 2 pro seasons under their belt?

Expansion is rumoured to be after the 2017 season, so it shouldn't be a concern.

Well if the expansion draft is in 2018 and he plays 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 the dman could be expansion draft eligible. But I guess we won't know for sure until we know when the draft is.

I just really hope we don't lose Kylington or Andersson to expansion...

I hope the Flames can trade up to get one of the Finns. I hope also that the Dallas pick turns into a 1 st cause that could potentially be a nice trade chip in order to move up.

That they have unreal expectations of the value of those players?

Seriously, if the Flames select a defenseman with their first pick in this draft I'm going to be pissed. With Giordano signed for another seven years, Brodie and Hamilton as your young core, Jokipakka just added, then having Wotherspoon and Kulak knocking on the door, Andersson, Kyllington, Hickey, Culkin and Sieloff all on the horizon, while you still have long shots like Rafikov, and Mattsson in the pipe, adding another seems really stupid, especially when the biggest need on this team is a top 6 forward.

There are some really good forwards available. Take a crack at a good forward. If the guy you want is a little lower down the list, and when I say the list I mean Bob McKenzie's list that most think is the gospel according to what teams are picking from, trade down and try to pick up another pick. Winnipeg (CHI-26), Carolina (LA-23) and Arizona (NYR-22) all have two first round picks. If the guy they like is available lower, trade down for another first.

I'm all for drafting a D in the first, if that D is really that good. IMO Chychrun looks like the best of the bunch and I'd have no issue if the Flames drafted him...that being said I wouldn't want them to pass on Dubois for him.

I'm still of the mindset that it's: Matthews, Laine, Pull-an-RV, Dubois, Chychrun, Tkchuck, Nylander.... The Flames should be able to get one of those guys

I keep hearing that Columbus will make a move to acquire both Finns the way Vancouver did it with the Sedins.

The only way this is possible is of they win a top 3 pick in the lottery. If they drop back to 6-7th then I just don't see them spending the assets to snag both. I can't see them moving Seth Jones which likely gets them one pick. Then their first would need to have a significant plus to get the other

Now if they land the Matthews pick I could see them trading down a spot then using assets to try and acquire the other pick but it is likely going to cost them Jones, Murray, Saad, or Jenner

Columbus has nothing to offer outside of Murray or Jones worth that.

What impresses you about each of these players? Upon viewing what made these guys stand out above their peers? What particular skills put them over the other guys? What was it that just made you certain they had a future in the NHL? Just curious to hear another perspective on each player and what things they do better than others.
