I seem to recall they used to pay 500,000 for arena management.
A 25 million fee with no contract bidding may well prove to be illegal if taken to court.

I don't know for sure, was trying to be political and fair actually. It very well could be. We will know soon enough if GWI sues.

Especially when the NHL documents state the money is to cover team losses.

I bid you adieu with absolutely no satisfaction.. I guess it removes the target off us for the summer but until a deal is final. I won't be celebrating.

Get it through your heads! I've been on both sides of this fence.. Canada, you are NOT the NHL.
The league's owners are pursuing this and wanting to close this deal for a reason.
Get over yourselves!

24 of 30 teams are in the USA!! 80% vs 20% in number of markets. Oh, and 87% of the total population of said 28 markets (LA+NY are obviously one market each). Only 67% of the revenue. These are rough figures, but are close. The 67% is based on the commonly mentioned (and never disputed) assertion that the Canadian teams make 1/3 of the league's revenue.
We have some sense of ownership because our "small markets" embarass many of your big ones. We care more, and always will. Americans can, and many Americans DO care about hockey. But if the NFL team goes deep, the baseball team makes it to the big game, or a whole whack of other things, Americans can get distracted away from hockey. There is nothing bigger to us, and for everyone one of this board's members' lifetimes, I do not see that changing.
Winnipeg failed for several reasons. Currency and arena being the two major issues. The Coyotes have a great arena, the currency is about par (and even if it wasn't, only those measly 6 Canadian teams deal in Canadian dollars), and even a league revenue sharing model to help them out. I don't understand how someone can argue that despite their 15 years of annual losses, keeping that team in Glendale is any sort of good idea.

I really don't understand the end game here. Even if they do somehow find an owner who will buy the team without pissing off the GWI, how is it gonna fix the issue of the team being unable to make money?

If they find an owner that will actually purchase the team with his own money then that will negate the GWI.

If...
Oh yeah, and the team will still lose money, which was his original question.

Maybe they're thinking the new TV deal and a new CBA will save them.

That would be up to the new owner to figure out. It's no different than any other distressed asset, new owners take over because they see the ability to purchase something that will be worth more than its sale price under their leadership.

Good luck re-signing all your players Bouw, I'm sure ol' Bryzy will take a deep discount to play down there.
Might as well start looking to sign rejects from the Might Ducks Movies, I'm sure the hick who gets two minutes for roping will feel right at home in Glendale.
