First day of spring next week. Who's excited?

It's the best time of year, because there are no mosquitoes.

Yeah, it's at the end of the block. Water's going down it, but the solid ice restricts the flow a bit.

Yep, the snow drifts on the road are higher than my sidewalk so the meltwater has nowhere to go. I have a glacier on my front sidewalk, that I am constantly scraping and salting. But hey, one of my lovely neighbors still called me in at 05:49 yesterday and the city was efficient enough to have the warning letter in my mailbox today. Am I supposed to be up at 5:00 I guess?

Yeah. The neighbours that don’t shovel the entire width of the sidewalk and the snow doesn’t melt into the lawn but bleeds out over the sidewalk and refreezes over night.

Heh, I’m slowly being vindicated about my bus stop/driveway bitching. Clear the pad all winter and bus still doesnt use it, so #### em. I let it build up and don’t clear the windrows.

Crews come to clear the ‘bus stop’ but scrape the #### out of my driveway instead. Jokes on them, the way the road is built, driveway/road turns into a massive lake non-stop. So now the bus stops in the middle of the street. And neighbours complain lol. If only there was a really simple solution

Why do so many drivers insist on spending $10 or more on detailed car washes in this weather? All I want to do is pop into the wash for a quick 5 minute spray to get rid of the worst of the mud and salt on my car, but every car wash has a 30+ minute wait because of those fools. I saw one dude go the whole nine yards with the foam, brush, soft water rinse, and then a shammy dry outside. What the hell is the point when every street is a river of meltwater?

I saw a residential intersection with various inflatables, rubber duckies and a sign saying "Ferry Rides Today."

This time of year may be my least favourite as a pedestrian. So much melt and freeze on the sidewalks. It's weird though. I t seems like a lot of people have just given up. Sure, you have those knobs who never do a bit of clearing ever, but there's a few houses on my street where they've got the full on three inches of frozen waterfall on the sidewalk, but they're from handyman type neighbours who are always first out in the morning shovelling.

^Me right now. I'm not going to lie, I've given up. I have neither the time nor the patience to keep my sidewalk pristine, especially when I know it'll turn into a skating rink in 12 hours anyway. I'll salt it as best I can, but otherwise: it's Alberta, it's spring, there's ice. Deal with it, people.

Go grab a bucket of pickle mix from the free city pickups and spread it on the sidewalk. Should last through a few freeze thaw cycles, and while the ice will form, at least the gravel stays embedded for grip. Only takes a minute to spread when you need more. Low effort.

Yep, I've gone through half a five gallon pail since last weekend. It's working like a charm and I am saving money on salt. Thanks taxpayer!
