I remember hearing the hype around Phaneuf. I didn't watch the flames that much during that time. Once i heard he was traded i was pissed.

I don't seem to remember Iginla having that hype or flash. He did come out at the World Juniors, but definitely not the dazzley type player. It was so long that I don't fully remember 'the hype'. It was a different time as well, hype just wasn't the same without the internet.
|
Phaneuf was a dominant offensive defenseman in the game for a few years before being traded to the Leafs. I'd hardly say he failed to live up to the hype. He was a beast in Calgary, end to end rushes and blistering one-timers being the norm for a while there. 75 goals in a little over 4 seasons from a D-man is impressive, regardless of who we are talking about.
Eventually though, he turned into a defensive liability and missed the net more often than he hit it, so he became expendable. No denying what he achieved in a few short years though. All-Star, Calder and Norris finalist and the boy dished out some of the best hits I've ever seen a Flame deliver.
I miss him.

This bugs me as well.
They've reduced the average age on their roster to 28 years old.
The Flames now have only 4 players on their team that are over the age of 31 (Iginla, Kiprusoff, Sarich and Tanguay) and 2 players aged 30 (Cammalleri and Jackman). They have 19 players aged 19-29.
Compare this to the start of the 2011 season, when they had 14 (WTF) players over the age of 32 and I'd say this argument is no longer valid.

It bugs me as well, kinda like that year when we were top 10 in offense, yet we were still "offensively challenged"
However I think as long as our most recognized players (Iginla and Kipprusoff) are on the wrong side of 30, we will be referred to as ageing

I've watched that video numerous times, and every time it bugs me that there are no replays. It's just over so quickly, hard to soak in the goodness when it flies by that fast. It's like inhaling a gourmet meal rather than taking your time and relishing every bite.

The clips i found didn't have replay's in them. I tried to find ones that did but it couldn't . AC made a rookie video with all of Sven's goals that have the replays on them and are in higher quality if you want to watch his.

While I agree with what you said up the reason this team can still be called aging is Kipper and Iggy are still clearly the best players on the roster and they are 35 and 36 respectively.

not disagreeing with you, however, when you consider the fact that 3 of our true offensive threats (iggy, tanguay, cammalleri), and arguably best player are on the older fronlt it's hard not to state that influx of young talent is an issue here. yes our defense is young, but the defense has proven not to be very good (same can be said of the backup goalie).
I know we're all excited about Bartschi, but i think most teams in the league of a high end prospect for 1 or more position (forward, defence, goaltending). Flames are definitely better than they have been post lockout, and appear to be improving every draft (welcomed change) but i think it's also somewhat fair to say that they're playing catch up to most of the league.

I get that, but if that is the logic people are going to use, why does it not apply to any team whose best player is of similar age?
Phoenix has Shane Doan, he's just as old as Iginla, but I don't think I've ever heard of the Coyotes being called an aging franchise.
It's hypocritical and it irks me, is all.

If the Flames had made the playoffs the past 3 years like Phoenix perhaps those comments would be much quieter?

Hmm, everyteam does have aging vets, but most teams have a strong youth presence somewhere in their top 6 forwards, top 4d, already in the lineup and/or pushing for the spot.
Phx, has tons of top end defensive prospects: Runblad, Gormley, Erixon. Thn you consider their lineup, which has a bunch of youth or players only entering their prime years: Boedkar, Hanzal, korpikoski, yandle, Ekman-larsson. Add that to the fact that they're even a playoff team over the past few years, and it's no doubt the flames are playing catch up big time.

Hockey_Ninja, if it's at all possible to you should compile Sven goals (and plays) from his time with the Heat. All the Heat highlights are uploaded to Youtube.
