Going back to a previous post of mine, the unfortunate fact of the matter is...she has a point.

They refine a huge chunk of our Raw Materials, if we 'Cut them off' we're stuck with a whole bunch of useless junk.

The United States is much, much farther along in the process of being energy and resource independent than we are.

Why? Because we're idiots.

It’s close, but the NDP appears poised to win Lethbridge West. About 250 votes separating them and 7 of the polling stations (out of 57) to report.

I was told Monday that it looked promising for the NDP but no one wanted to get cocky about it.

It’s 175 votes now with a special poll (the other had 10 votes) and two advance polls. I would be surprised if there were over 175 votes total remaining, but I have no idea.

This is not really true. The Midwest refining complexes have really only a single source, the Enbridge mainline. You might have extra oil being offshored in Texas, but it has zero pathway to the Midwest. They would starve for feedstock, almost immediately.

It’s just not true they are further along, we depend on them for basically zero exports, or could if we needed to. Geographically in many areas we are their one and only option.

With all votes counted in Lethbridge
Miyashiro, NDP: 7,239 - 53.4%
Middleton-Hope, UCP: 6,089 - 44.9%
Veverka, AP: 233 - 1.7%

NDP holds seat, Miyashiro comes a hair shy of matching veteran Shannon Phillips’ last vote share.

Ain’t no quo like the status quo!

60% of the votes cast were in the advanced polls. In 2025, look for the UCP to introduce legislation to get rid of all advanced polls.

I hate even the idea that we will have to rely on the federal government to force our provincial government to do the right thing. That also shows how much confidence I have in the UCP to do what is best for Albertans as a whole, and not 200 workers, an Australian magnate, and the people being bribed by said magnate.

So the right thing is discouraging investment in the Province? Did you also just say the federal government, In this case I’m assuming Guilbeault, is looking out for Alberta? I highly doubt that. He hasn’t made that a priority previously.

Has the company proposing the development detailed their plan for tailings handling yet? Guessing this is the Grassy mountain steel making coal mining proposal. I checked out their website. It says the development would be on a pre-existing unreclaimed site and that part of the project would be reclaiming the site over the life of the new mine. Which would be a positive.

So again has their been any mention of their plan for tailings containment. I’m assuming engineered ponds. But there are other methods as well just from reading on the net. I’m just curious what they are doing. I guess since there was an existing mine there they would be able to tell if it had an impact on the watershed. I’m also guessing that there have been upgrades to tailings management over the years. So whatever is being proposed is probably an upgrade over the previous setup. I couldn’t find it anywhere.

They seem to be doing a good job of discouraging renewables investments, but apparently a coal mine built in the mountains is ok.

Baseline level of selenium
Irrigation district water quality testing over 7
years from the Oldman River at Fort Macleod
showed an mean value for selenium at 0.6 ug/L
and a median value of 0.5 ug/L.
page 24 https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/document...01/136489E.pdf

What is the standard for levels of selenium in drinking water?

According to Health Canada’s Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, the MAC for selenium is 0.05 mg/L (milligrams per litre).
https://myhealth.alberta.ca/alberta/...ing-water.aspx

So it sounds like the levels are already 10x higher than what is considered safe. This water is used to irrigate our food, feed our cattle, and ingest by humans. Coal mines process large amounts of water, so without any strong science based analysis of the dangers here, I don't see how this is a good idea. Goriders, you say economic opportunities, but you need to look at the costs, too.

0.05mg/L would be 50ug/L, so plenty of room for more selenium for a foreign company to make money.

But, the government said it's considering changes including a second agency to oversee the MAID process, a dispute mechanism for families, a new framework which would allow confidential MAID-related information to be shared, and other provincial limits on eligibility.

Currently, all MAID cases go to the province's medical examiner.

Health lawyer and senior counsel with global law firm Denton, Rose Carter said she's concerned about what these possible changes could mean for medical autonomy.

"I find some of those plans to be interesting, if not disturbing," she said in an interview.

"We have so many safeguards in place. It's confusing to me because we live in a free and democratic society and as long as you and I have capacity, we're entitled under the law to request or do certain things."

It's amazing how this government continues to find ways to infringe on personal rights and freedoms while somehow still pretending(and people seriously believing) that Conservative Libertarians give a #### about anything other than controlling people. #### these tyrants, I'll die when I want.

Don’t believe the spin: Coal is no longer essential to produce steel

Australian metallurgical coal exports are forecast to peak in two years’ time and then decline out to the end of the decade. Canadian exports are already in decline.
