Smith is 100% appeasing that overgrown oompa-loompa. FWIW, it's not a terrible strategy if you find a way to make the schtick convincing while also spending bugger all on it, and a bit of theatre can go a long way when there's nobody home upstairs. Hell, just mimic airport security.
Of course this is Smith, so it will cost an exorbitant sum and it will go to someone on the UCP's Christmas card list.

Reading and re-reading the news release, I am just at a loss of what Smith is trying to achieve. Is she insulting the Americans by saying we need to protect the border more to keep their riff-raff out, or that we need to help the Americans by catching our riff-raff that their border security seems to be unable to catch. Has anybody asked their UCP MLA wtf is this attempting to achieve?

I have an NDP MLA (Joe Ceci), so I'm sure his response would be a more politically strategic version of what could be boiled down to "Who the f-ck knows."

Even when/if in power Ceci's response would be "who the #### knows" because he is clueless regardless.

If the NDP was in power this wouldn’t be an issue so I doubt Ceci would be commenting on it. Though I understand this was just a poorly thought out scenario so you could figure out how to get a dig in on Ceci.

I'm pretty sure tariffs can vary based on province of origin. It would be more complicated but that's never stopped governments before. And ss an example, the softwood lumber tariffs absolutely vary by the province where the trees were cut down. In fact iirc I think there's actually a different rate by producer not just province.

I'm assuming the UCP booked this specific day so that students wouldn't be around / have gone home for the holidays, which they assume will then hurt the NDP's chances. Why else do it this super close to Christmas.

These things are hard to predict, but what’s the feeling down in Lethbridge on this one?

It's a mixed feeling down here. Tons more blue signs than orange, but more orange signs on actual lawns v. public areas. When I did my advanced voting there was 0 line, but had a steady amount of people coming in and out while I was there.
I do not expect a high voter turn out and I think this will be a close race. Can't really tell down here who is ahead with the way people were talking.

Fair question on the trade deficit with Canada Mr. President
@realDonaldTrump
- the reason for this is because Canada (especially Alberta) sends billions of raw materials (oil, gas, minerals, grain, livestock, timber, etc) to your U.S. refineries and factories which your great American companies and workers upgrade and sell around the world, including back to Canada (we are your biggest customer by a mile).
Literally millions of good paying American jobs and companies rely on these affordable raw materials from Canada to make trillions of dollars of wealth in your country.
As a conservative Premier in Canada, I believe we have 2 of the greatest countries on earth. We have fought and bled together in many wars, and built an incredible alliance and partnership. I really hope we can strengthen that partnership throughout your Presidency by securing our shared border as you’ve requested and partnering to protect our North American workers from unfair Chinese trade practices. Americans and Canadians will both benefit immensely from this.
We, in the province of Alberta (which sends 4.3 million barrels of oil and gas to your country each day) stand ready to work with you.
Looking so forward to attending your inauguration in Washington this January!

Trump can take this 51st state nonsense and shove it straight up his fat, orange, fascist ass. Other than Smith and her UCP clown show, Canadians don’t want any part of that crap.

I think that tweet needs to be followed with the show of strength threats of cutting them off. We have a big enough stick that we could damage the US by destroying ourselves. We have to appear just crazy enough to use it. Flattery plus consequence

Pointing out how much oil we send them probably isnt the best way to get on the good side of the giant baby, hes all 'drill baby drill'
Explaining to him about the different kinds of oil that their refineries are set up to process probably like teaching the stick how to fetch.
