Top players in general were taking a higher % of the cap in the first few years after the lockout Iginlas 7 million was probably 17%. Richards and Lecavalier were cap max at $7.8.
Since then we'very seen a decline in % of the cap going to the leagues best.
McDavid will be bucking the trend if he asks for nearly the max.
Anyway we'll have a clearer picture after the season. If Crosby wins the Art Ross and Hart it's a totally different conversation than if McDavid does.

McDavid is the only reason the Oilers aren't last overall in the standings. His agent is going to push for a record deal.

At the rate Crosby is going, I wouldnt be surprised if he took the Hart, Ross and Rocket

McDavid winning or not winning awards this season ultimately won't matter a lot when it comes to his second contract. He'd be stupid not to wait until the end of 2017-18.

Rocket and Hart yes but I think McDavid has the Art Ross (without injury).

You can quote precedent and look at trends all you want, but there is only 1 question. Does team McDavid want a max style contract? If he wants it, he gets it. The Oilers have nothing, yes nothing, in terms of a bargaining position. So what does Connor want? Does he love the city? How many dollars is willing to surrender in order to win? If he looks the team up and down and feels it's not built to win regardless, maybe he's less motivated to give money up in order to continue to lose. If McDavid and his agent have a high number in mind, and the Oilers open at around 10 or 10.5, there is nothing stopping them from saying, respectfully, we are going to play the season and reopen negotiations with you on July 2 after Connor has looked at his offer sheets. Maybe you think Flames fans are just imagining their own dream situation here, or maybe we're asking, Do Connor and his agent like money?

Well...I hate to be the Debbie Downer here, but this sentence is not strictly correct.
At the moment you are right, the Oilers have no bargaining position, that team is McDavid, Talbot and a random hodge-podge of scrubs.
However, they could acquire a bargaining position by doing the same thing that they have proven to excel at: Losing and drafting wunderkinder.
They could have newer, shinier toys by the time that contract has to be signed that make McDavid....less indispensable.
But still suck.

Sure it was Connor. This loosely translates to:
"Did I make myself look like a whiny foolish baby? Totes jokes mcgoats! Super Serious Swearsies!"
Quote:
With a couple of days passing since Connor McDavid called out Flyers defenceman Brandon Manning, the Oilers captain jokes that his uncharacteristic outburst was just meant to "keep the media on their toes".

Peanuts would be overpayment on Nuge. He is awful, limited offensive upside, average at best in his own end. He is a bigger version of Sam Gagner with a worse contract.
Sam Gagner had 38 points in 48 games in his 23 year old season and 37 points in 67 games in his 24 year old year.
Nuge had 34 points in 55 games as a 22 year old and has 14 points in 30 games as a 23 year old.
His general suckiness and his contract should make him untradeable.

Crosby's on pace for more points even though he missed six games. I think it will be a really close race.

No doubt. Crosby has 7 less points in 8 less games.
McDavid has 52 games left at 1.27 pts/gm=66 more points, so 104 total
Crosby has 54 more games left at 1.41 pts/gm=76 more points, so 107 total

Oilers don't believe in bridge contracts or earning things anyways. They would make McDavid the highest paid player in the league and trumpet that as a win.

Umm... Connor McJesus: Your team has 7 wins in the last 22 games. Maybe you should be focusing on getting some W's instead of toying with the media...
Good to know he has his priorities straight.

Disagree. He's not the player he was hyped up to be in draft year, but he would flourish on a good hockey team, imo.

With the credentials his client has, the agency should absolutely be seeking the league max. Centerman, captain, Art Ross material, 20 years old.
|
You really think they can build a winning team with McDavid making $15 million? Why didn't Crosby ask for the max? Why hasn't pretty much every great player in the history of the NHL during a cap era ask for the max?

It's true...
They were trumpeting about landing Lucic as if it were a success, and a sign of Edmonton becoming this desirable destination when in reality they probably paid even above UFA market value on that contract to get him to bite. There's absolutely nothing rosy about that deal especially now after seeing him in year 1...of 7... terribad.

What is flourish, maybe get 50 points in a good year? He has never demonstrated any real offensive ability. He is too slow for his slight stature and does not do much defensively. 6 million dollars for what he offers is a gross overpayment.

And I'm not sure what anyone is expecting. He's a 55 point guy. He's on pace for 22 goals and 57 points...
That contract was Chiarelli's desperation
