Haha, stupid USA, thinking medal count is important, sorry, but it just isn't.
1 Canadian Gold > 10 American Bronzes.

Um, sure...I don't feel that way. I'd personally rather win the total medal count, but to each their own. This week has been much better medal wise though, that is for sure. As an aside, can I ask you why you have this random hatred towards Americans? I've noticed it all over this place and I just don't understand it. It reeks of insecurity, and considering both are great nations, why the hate?

I'd rather have more Gold than total medals. A gold medal shows you WON the event, a silver shows that you LOST the event, a bronze shows you PARTICIPATED. When a country like Canada with a population of 34million can win more Gold than any other nation, with whom have a population of 300+ million (USA) and 80million (Germany), it shows that we win events rather than just "do good" in them.
I don't "hate" the USA. But when it comes to sports, or country vs country, the USA can lick my salty ball sack. Most Americans I have met are nice people.

Okay, that makes sense. Also good to hear/read that you don't just randomly hate Americans either.

So far 2/2 - if the hockey team and Martin can come through the record is Canada's.

And if you predicted which two of those events we'd be most likely to win gold in I think most would agree that it'd be curling first and hockey a close second.
25 guaranteed medals with the men's 4-man bobsleigh team in very good position for silver/bronze and a strong possibility at the most golds ever.
I think all of us would have taken that result 2 weeks ago.

I wonder though, were there as many events in 1972, let alone 2002, to be able to get a gold medal?

Obviously there's more medals to be given out, but for how much the US is playing up winning the most medals ever, Canada should be just as (if not more) proud of winning the most golds ever (should they pull it off)
These records are meant to be broken as new events are added every Olympics, but it's still a huge accomplishment to be the country to do it.

Agreed, not taking anything away from an amazing last few days. They do drop some events, just not sure if more were added since 2002 then were dropped.

37 gold medals were handed out in 1976 (the record, not 72)
So far, 81 have been handed out in these games, with I think about 5 left.

But it has to be said that it was the USSR winning those medals.

The other thing is that the games are becoming increasingly more competitive and, more importantly, more global. There's now nations like China and Korea not only putting many athletes in the Winter Olympics, but gold medal caliber ones.
