I am extending my previous offer.
I currently have a bet with Troutman for $100. I say that the Liberals will GAIN in popular support *AND* GAIN seats from last election. If either of those predictions is wrong, Troutman gets the $100, if both predictions are right I get $100.
I'll take up to 4 others. PM if interested. Also willing to do forum donation bets (if I win $100 goes to the Devils forum I frequent; if I lose, my $100 goes to CP).
|
I like your side. What is gain in popular support defined as? Percentage popular vote compared with last election? I may be willing to go in with you on any action you get on this bet.

As long as you believe in that primacy, and in those ideals, questions of ethnicity or residence are immaterial. I vastly prefer a patriotism of the mind and not the land, and for a cosmopolitan view of citizenship over a parochial one. Patriotism of the latter kind is nothing more than a refined version of tribalism and is a negative, not a positive force.
You miss the entire point of my comparison. In both cases, the man is perceived as an outsider and thus automatically unworthy of trust.

Just seems wrong to me,
If it's just a job and where you live doesn't matter political parties should start recruiting leaders like executive headhunters find CEO's
www.jobshop.ca "Now hiring, 'BE THE PRIMINISTER of CANADA' Liberal party looking for good leader, must be etc. etc. etc. and college degree"
Being the primeminister is more than just a job. Igantieff has pretty much put in his resume, gotten past the first round and is going to go through a few years of interviews for the position, if it doesn't work out he's going to pack up and head home.
I may have missed the comparison, I don't know, but one is an outside to a province/small culture of Canada, the other is an "outsider" (your word) to the Country he wants to run!

If it's THIS fall I might take you up. I think this would be a disastrous move; though I note that no-one in the upper echelons of the LPC has asked for my opinion.

Troutman and I made our bet on the eve of the LAST election. I left it open... it was the NEXT election, whenever that happened to be. Same rules apply.
Yads: Correct. It's national popular vote.

I don't remember any bet. Are you sure it was me? That does not sound like a bet I would make. Especially the $100 part. I'm not sure I would have disagreed with your contention either.
From the old thread:
Okay. Since sooooo many here think that this is going cause a depression and chaos across the country, I'll make this deal:
I'll bet $10 to the first ten people that the Liberals will GAIN seats and GAIN in popular support in the next election. Just PM me.
Edit: Nevermind. Someone just took all ten bets.
????

Vinny Gambini: I understand you played a game of pool with Lisa for $200, which she won. I'm here to collect.
J.T.: How 'bout if I just kick your a$$?
Vinny Gambini: Oh, a counter-offer. That's what we lawyers - I'm a lawyer - we lawyers call that a counter-offer. This is a tough decision here. Get my a$$ kicked or collect $200. Let me think... I could use a good a$$-kickin', I'll be very honest with you... nah, I think I'll just go with the two hundred.
J.T.: Over my dead body.
Vinny Gambini: You like to renegotiate as you go along, don't you? Well here's my counter-offer... do I have to kill you? What if I were just to kick the ever loving sh$t out of you?
J.T.: In your dreams.
Vinny Gambini: Oh no no... in reality. If I was to kick the out of you, do I get the money?
J.T.: You kick the , out of me.
Vinny Gambini: Yeah.
J.T.: Yeah. you get the money.
Vinny Gambini: So, here are my options. Option A: I get my a$$ kicked or Option B: I kick your a$$ and collect the 200. I think I'm gonna go with Option B: Kickin' your a$$ and collecting $200.
[ Takes off his jacket]
J.T.: We're gonna fight now?
Vinny Gambini: Yeah. But first, show me the money.
J.T.: I have it.
Vinny Gambini: You have it, then show it to me.
J.T.: [ pause] I can get it.
Vinny Gambini: You can get it? Okay, get it. Then we'll fight.
[ Takes his jacket from Lisa]

What's the deal with Layton now saying he'll side with Harper in order to prevent an election? This sounds like one of two things:
1. "I'm still pissed at the Libs over leaving my attempted coup, so I'm going to screw them by siding with the PCs."
2. "Overtly, I'll make it look like siding with Harper will save us from an election... but covertly, I know that if Harper sides with me, Ignatief will demolish him in the election and that will be the end of the PCs."
Personally, I'm hoping that Harper sticks to his guns and kicks Layton to the curb. I don't want him anywhere near any kind of power in this country, I don't care who I'm voting for.

After listening to John MaCallum or however you spell his name, it sounds like the Conservatives are going to put the home renovation tax credit up for vote and the Liberal's have committed to voting against it.
There's no way that this governments not going to fall in the first hour of parliament.
Welcome to election 2009, where nothing is going to change except 300 million dollars lost, and even more voter apathy.
The more that I think about it, the more that I realize that at the end of the day democracy doesn't work.

Which means what? That everyone who spent $10,000 - $20,000 on their home will no longer be eligible for a tax credit?

According to this article, the Liberals have stated that not only will they vote against the Home Tax Credit to trigger an election, but they will actually introduce it themselves afterwards if they win.
Pretty slimy, if you ask me.

Whoops, forgot to actually link the article...
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/0...erals_election
Quote:
Some Liberals suspect Harper will provoke his own defeat by introducing a ways and means motion - implementing aspects of last January's budget, including the popular home renovation tax credit - as soon as Parliament resumes on Sept. 14.
Such motions are automatically deemed confidence votes.
Liberals say they'll oppose the motion but reinstate measures like the home-reno tax break should they form government.
|
Although, on second reading... it's saying the home reno credit would be voted down as part of a package, and then reinstated after the Liberals won... not what I initially thought, which was that they were voting the credit down by itself.

And if they don't form the government, they've indicated that they're going to vote against everything that the government introduces. So if the government doesn't fall expect delays for anything to get through the house. If the Conservatives win a minority, expect that the Liberals will try to defeat every motion, if the Liberal's form the next minority expect it to fall within the next year as the Bloc, Conservatives and NDP would gain nothing politically in supporting the Liberals.
Welcome to government instability 101 where we have an election every single year.

Right, which is why I've been saying all along, that I wish all these people voting for fringe parties would just finally get off the fence, pick a side and help bring some stability to this country.
Enough with the frickin minority governments already.

Sorry. Checked my PMs and it was Ford Prefect. My bad.
FanIn80: I have never and will never vote Liberal. I just think they can't possibly do worse than what Dion did.

These red b@stards are going to cost me $1300
Part of the "wait and see" will be the pocketing of that money.
