I think CMPunk has already seen it 2 or 3 times already.
...and he painted himself blue like the Na'vi for at least one of the shows

You know, when ever there's a lot of people saying "Best Movie Ever, You Must See This", it usually means the movie is somewhere between okay and intolerable crap.
It's just the same as with music. There's tons of people screaming "best artist/band ever" when talking about something like Christina Aguilera or Marilyn Manson.
So basicly after reading this thread my expectations have sunk really low.

3D is just splitting what the right and left eye sees. There is no need for 'special' player or TV. you just need glasses to separate the image for the eyes, the brain does the rest.
the image is split by colour (red and green/blue glasses) or wave length (polarized lenses like the imax ones).

Now that was a fantastic movie. Really one of the best of the decade. I think the last time a movie really had me that wowed was Fellowship of the Ring. This movie was even more stunning visually. 9/10. I wanna go again!

Wow.
What do you expect people to say then? "This movie is utter garbage, go see it!"?
AVATAR is a wonderful film with a well-excuted and compelling (albeit less than original) story with visuals that are far beyond anything ever seen on film. That is the truth. If you don't believe me it is your loss.

Only 23 hours and 38 minutes to go until I get to see it. OH BOY!! My expectations aren't really sky high because I have avoided this thread (don't want anything spoiled either) and reading about the movie. But I am pretty sure my mind will be blown with the effects.
By the way Itse, the best band ever is Kalmah.

I sort of wish I hadnt seen it already. Movies like this only come around every once in a while and to experience it for the first time again would be fantastic.

just for the visual it is worth seeing, wow that was outstanding
I had never seen a 3d movie before but it was like the difference from SD to HD x10000
absolutely crystal clear, and the 3d was amazing
story wasn't amazing but it was solid, and the action was ridiculously good
definitely recommend

Did you everyone buy tickets in advance? What are the chances I can get the to theater 45 minutes early tonight and manage to get in and not be in the front row?

I went to the 330 show in Vancouver and it was packed
got there 20 mins early and was lucky to find a set of 3 seats in a row that wasn't too low
As I was walking out I saw the 8pm and later showings all ready had huge lines

I got my tickets Friday at 6PM, and the ticket machine said "tickets for Avatar sold out for all of Friday" and there was still 3 showings after 7, and I assume today was the same. I got my Imax ones so I'm not sure about normal showings. The tickets I got Friday are for tomorrow at 7PM and I'll be there at 6 so I can get good seats.
I am surprised people didn't know Cameron was Canadian, I found that out a few years ago and was giddy with joy to know the best director is Canadian.

Pretty good movie, though I got the Avatar headache something fierce - partly because I was wearing glasses over glasses, and partly because I'm still taking painkillers for recent dental work. Ahh well, headache was worth it.
This was an amazing movie for it's graphical style and special effects. The movie itself was exactly what the trailers make it out to be: Mechwarrior meets Ewoks meets Dances with Wolves. The storyline was hardly any sort of creative breakthrough, but damn was that a fun movie.

The score sucked, there was very little in the story that was original. I've read some reviews that compare it to Star Wars. WTF! Thirty years from, now we are not going to be walking around saying "I See You" and spouting off about Mehiwa.
The visuals were stunning, definately gives Zoo lights a run for its money. I enjoyed the movie but looking back on it, I'm pretty annoyed by the little flaws. I keep thinking that for 500 million it has to be perfect.
Oh yeah, and the Navi could have had a bit more air in their fun bags...

Well I already have a 3D TV, I'm hoping the 3D Blu-Ray won't be locked to the Sony 3D TVs though. The PS3 will be getting a firmware update, but since my 3D TV runs of my computer and the driver for my glasses is locked to my nVidia graphics card that the nVidia player will get an update for Blu-Ray 3D and I'll be able to stick a Blu-Ray drive in my computer and play them, which would work now with 3D DVDs. Unfortunately, most of the 3D movies released lately haven't been released on 3D DVD. All there is a few bad old horror movies.

That's very inaccurate. Splitting by colour (anaglyph) doesn't require anything special, but it's also . Any other method does require special hardware. Splitting by polarization needs special hardware, and a special player. Most 3D solutions don't use either though, they use shutterglasses, which alternately block the left and right eye. For this you need a TV with TRUE 120 Hz (or you'll see the flicker) and a 3D sync output (unless the player can handle the sync).
From the article photon linked:

I guess the next wave of 3D, perhaps in twenty or thirty years, will present 'real' planes that we can focus on at will - now that's going to be something special for your grand-kids.
|
Sorry, this is just hilarious. Cameron chose to shoot with narrow depth-of-field (a choice I disagree with). It's not something that'll take 20 years to change, it was an artistic decision (possibly so that it would still have depth in 2D). In fact, I'm pretty sure most other 3D movies have a much deeper depth-of-field. Anything shot without an intentionally huge aperture (or digitally blurring) will have all the planes you could possibly want to focus on.
