Anyone go to a burger joint called Fuddruckers on McLeod?# I think it turned into Jack Astor's or something.# Used to have awesoem burgers.
|
Yeah I worked there when it closed. Fun place for sure.
|
Best thing about Fuddruckers...writing your name down and waiting.....
"IP Freely, your burger is ready". Ensuing cackles from high school students as they went to retrieve their food.
One other burger place I do remember was Bob's burgers. And working in Chi Chi's kitchen for a couple of months. I was fired because I failed to show up for a shift cos' there was this party I really wanted to go to....
My god, whatever happened to that spirit?
|
Believe it or not there is still a Bob's in Calgary. It is out on the far end of Glenmore Trail - in the mini-mall next to The Glenmore Inn. So if you have a hankering for a Bob's Burger there ya go! [/b][/quote]
I had no idea. wow. we used to get food from the one on 37st street all the time

hmmmm...some of those arent going back that far.
I remember when the hotels like the Highlander, Airliner, etc etc were huge bars that fit well over 2-300 people. They would have live bands coming in to play every night, something that is missing from todays entertainment bill. Lots of Canadian bands like Chilliwack, Streetheart, etc were some of the young bands just starting out who played these venues.
Then disco came in and they chopped the bars into halves or quarters and made smaller dance halls with canned music.
I also remember a small club on 4th street NW called the Hoppin Grape that had some great bands as well....and when it was popular....streakers!
Those were the days!
Not going to go back to the sock hops though....too far for some of you young'uns!
Also...as per Cow's message...I used to hunt gophers where the Deerfoot now runs...nothin but fields in those days.

I haven't read the whole thread but the one Calgary memory that I miss probably more than anything else is The Republik. I saw so many amazing bands there for cheap, it was a sad day when that venue closed.

That, my friend is one of the greatest travesties of the Calgary club scene. 25 cent hiballs fed my craving on many a Thursday, and there was nothing like getting up on stage grooving to a little NIN.
One of my fondest memories: I saw my first girl/girl makeout there, and took one of 'em home (she was Swedish, let me tell ya holy moly).
The last night it was open was pretty funny, all the old school punk rockers that used to go there in the late 80/s early nineties crawled out of the woodwork, put on their Dead Kennedies t-shirts and combat boots, and tore the place apart. It was kinda funny watching the expressions on all these young kids that had no idea what the place was all about and the clientel it had when it first got going.

My memories go the other way. I grew up in London and moved to Calgary 7 years ago. I actually just got back from a business trip to London. Growing up I heard a lot about Calgary, our neighbour was a relocated Calgarian with lots of stories.

Haha! We are exact opposites! I'm Bizarro Bobblehead!
Anyhow, nice to see this thread ressurected. How many people my age still refer to C.O.P. as Paskapoo? It will always be Paskapoo to me.

I hope I'm not the only semi-old (not cheese/cow old) timer who doesn't remember spending many a night at the Old Republik on 9th ave...and that frickin' cold roof top patio
remember the new one opening...and closing
and lots of memories (and a few blackouts sadly) in between

Perhaps this is the best thread to ask this question...
When I'm driving in to work, I see something that looks like a drive-in screen. It would be in the NE, between Barlow and 36th, just south of 16th. I see it when I have come off 16th(westbound) and waiting for the light to turn so I can go south on 36th.
It looks like an old screen that is still sitting there. I never remember to actually drive by and take a look, I only ever seem to think of it when I am looking at it (besides now). Is it an old screen, or just something that looks like one?

I thin you're probably seeing the site of the old Sundance Drive In. One of two old drive-ins Calgary had. The other being the Coral 4 out east on 17th Ave (which also still has two screens up).
Ahhh. How I miss them both. Saw a double feature there of Silverado and Runaway (with Tom Sellek). That was the first of many good memories at the drive in.

"AM 106 TOP TEN AT TEN! NUMBER ONE!!!"
Ah, I remember getting woken up bright and early on Saturday mornings by my father, dragging me out to my swimming lessons at the "Leisure Centre" in the northeast right behind the CO-OP and now right beside Lester B. Pearson High School. My parents would shop for groceries during my lesson and afterwards, we'd go down to chinatown for dimsum.
Lots of good memories in fact, of the Leisure Centre. I learned how to skate in their ice rink. I remember my dad used to take me every Sunday night.
Whitehorn represent! Lived in Whitehorn all my life! Good ol' Whitman Place.
The Food For Less some of you are talking about was about a 5 minute walk from my old house in Calgary.
I still remember when Deerfoot Mall was one of the crappiest malls around (not sure if it still is?). Nothing around in that area except for that one mall.
Or the old airport (I think?) in the northeast? I think it was called FIELD or something? Some company? My mother used to work there.
I miss Calgary.

First time on the slopes was at Paskapoo in grade seven. That'd be, ohhh, 1978 or so.

I remember taking my first skiing lessons there when I was about five or six. I think it was already COP at that point. It would have been around 1985-86. My parents still call it Paskapoo sometimes though.

I remember being too shy in grade 2 when skiing at paskapoo with school and passing my pants cause I needed an adult to undue all my equiment. Man that sucked.
|
Harsh.
I took lessons there in Grade 5 and for some reason I was quite scared of getting off the chairlift. I was convinced that baby was gonna hit me in the back of the head. So anyway I really wimped out one time and ended up going right around the loop at the top, which, apparently, is not a very good thing to do. As soon as I went around the corner my skis hit this big bar and the whole lift shut down. Oddly enough, I wasn't scared of the 15 foot drop that I had to pull off, landing sideways on a sheer cliff (as I remember it) and skiing away in a hurried fashion.
Nobody knew what the hell happened and I wasn't going to tell anyone. Took them quite a while to get the lift running and make sure I wasn't dead up there but I was long gone.
