So people should be punished based on "what ifs"? These two situations are so different. Five people dead, versus one person dead. If you can't see the difference between the two incidents, then I can't help you. I am by no means downplaying Heatley's accident, but this is just so much worse and tragic.

People are pretty darn 'law and order' around here and the Heatley reaction seemed out of step with that.

I think it is because many people themselves speed and could imagine the same type of situation happening to them. Heck I imagine that many could imagine themselves as Snyder egging their buddy on as well and may not want their buddy being punished if that were the case. The family of Snyder also had a big part to do with it as well. Hard to call for blood when those closest to the victim don't want to see any themselves.
The Calgary incident might explain some of the feelings here but from what I have heard the feeling of Calgary fans don't seem to be that out of line form those from other cities in general.

I think Heatly got off pretty easy. If myself or any other regular person would have done the same thing? We would be sitting in jail. Yeah, people speed. But speeding on the highway and going 80mph in a residential area are two very differant things.

I dont want to hijack the thread but "allegedly"??? That wasnt even a good rumour back then.
Back on topic...
Good to see the guy will spend the holidays in remand. Only down side is he'll get double or triple time for time served awaiting trial if he ever gets convicted of anything.

Well, last time I checked, there is a difference between aggravated assault vs. manslaughter / murder too. The actions could have been the same by the assailant, but the result determined the charges. So you bet outcomes matter when determining the severity of the punishment.

For those interested, charges have been upgraded against the driver. He could spend life in prison:

So he'll spend five years in jail instead of one. Better, I guess.

This is almost guaranteed to be a "insult the victims family" with the punishment trial. If we're lucky he'll get 7-10 years, chances are 4-5 years total.

Sure is an argument for consecutive terms instead of concurrent ones.

Had an idea!

He should get 30 to life. Easily.
Doubt he will though.
Drunk driving should be severely punished.

Not sure how off-base I am but is it possible to go down to the court house and sit in on a trial like this? I've always been kind of curious.

Drinking and driving should be an automatic 2nd degree murder charge if you kill someone.
If it's true that he threw a vodka bottle out of the truck after the crash and refused to give a breath sample, it's obvious he was drinking and driving.
